Lynx Women Upset Bid Falls Just Short to Top Seed BSC

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Despite a terrific effort from the No. 8 seed Rhodes College women's basketball team, the Lynx fell just short to top-seeded Birmingham-Southern by the score of 59-51 on Friday afternoon at Bill Battle Coliseum.

The Lynx shot 37% from the field, connected on four 3-pointers while shooting 11 of 16 from the charity stripe. Rhodes out rebounded the Panthers, 36-32, but BSC was able to force 16 Lynx turnovers while the Panthers only turned it over 11 times.

It was a back-and-forth first quarter as senior Blaire Smith, junior Erin Deery, and sophomore Allie Young all pitched in four points with Rhodes trailing 17-13. BSC pushed their lead out to nine at 23-14, but Rhodes went on a 13-4 run to end the quarter behind a pair of three's from Deery and sophomore Sara Giesen to make it a27 all at the break.

In the second half, a three from Smith and a bucket Young put Rhodes ahead 32-30 early on. Young would score six straight points early in the second to push the lead out to 36-33.

Birmingham-Southern roared back and closed the quarter with a 43-40 lead.

Rhodes scored the first four points of the fourth behind Young and senior Bailey Kramer, but a 3-pointer by BSC put them back ahead 46-44. The Panthers pushed their lead out to four, but a 3-pointer from Giesen got it down to 52-51.

However, BSC clamped down on defense and used free throws to close the game out and win, 59-51.

Young finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds while Deery added nine points. Smith had seven points to go with six boards and two blocks while Giesen scored six off the bench.

Rhodes concludes their season at 5-21. Head Coach Matt Dean is set to retire after this season while the Lynx also say goodbye to two seniors in Smith and Kramer.
