MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College women's lacrosse team powered their way to an 18-4 win over Berry College on Saturday afternoon at Mason Field for their first Southern Athletic Association win of the season.
Rhodes out shot the Vikings, 42-16, including 34 shots on target and forced 20 Berry turnovers while only committing a season low nine turnovers. Rhodes also had 23 ground balls and was 16-for-24 in draw controls.
Junior
Maggie Rippeto and
Lindsay Gess put Rhodes ahead 2-0 in the first eight minutes. After a goal by Berry, Rhodes scored six consecutive goals as sophomore
Annika Hedlund and freshman
Kaeley Bennett got the run started while a pair of goals from Cunningham and goals from Gess and Rippeto made it an 8-1 game.
The Vikings got a pair of goals to make it an 8-3 game, but a goal from junior
Ashley Doyle in the final 1:30 sent Rhodes into the half with a 9-3 lead.
That sparked the Lynx scoring the first six goals of the second half as they suddenly went ahead 15-3. Gess scored a pair of goals during the run while Cunningham, Doyle and juniors
Erin Gleeson and
Olivia Holmes.
Cunningham and Rippeto closed the game with three consecutive goals as they out scored the Viking 9-1 in the second half for the dominant win.
Cunningham finished with five goals while Gess scored four goals. Rippeto added three goals while Doyle had two goals and two assists. Hedlund added two assists while Holmes also had an assist.Â
Rippeto picked up four ground balls while Cunningham had three. Hedlund, Gleeson, and junior
Rachel Windmueller all added two ground balls. Junior
Katherine Tooley got her fourth win of the season, picking up six saves.
Rhodes moves to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the SAA. The Lynx are back in action next Saturday as they continue SAA play with a 12 PM road matchup with Millsaps at Harper Davis Field.
