Pitching Powers Lynx Softball to Pair of Wins Over Austin College

MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College softball team went 2-0 on Saturday afternoon as they picked up a pair of wins over the Austin College 'Roos at the Lynx Softball Field. The Lynx got excellent pitching and clutch hitting to pick up a 4-2 and walk off 5-4 win.

In the first game, sophomore Bri Maniscalco was terrific, pitching six complete, allowing no earned runs on one hit to go with two strikeouts and only one walk. Freshman Shannon Tierney closed the game, earning her first save of the season.

Rhodes got on the board first as sophomore Katelynn Bresler singled home freshman Kayla Rose to take a 1-0 lead. Bresler doubled home a run in the fourth to move ahead 2-0 while sophomore Haley Rath and freshman Olivia Jackson each drove in a run to take a 4-0 lead.

Austin College scored a pair of runs in the fifth, but Rhodes slammed the door shut for the win, including getting out of a bases loaded jam in the seventh inning for the win. 

Rose finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two stolen bases while Bresler was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs, and a run scored. Rath finished 1-for-3 with a RBI double and a run scored while Jackson was 1-for-3 with a RBi and a stolen base.

In the second game, RBIs from juniors Kirsten Samuels and Alison Long in the fourth to put Rhodes ahead 2-0. Austin College got two back in the fifth off a long home run, but Rhodes took a 3-2 lead on a groundout by sophomore Kendall Henry.

However, the 'Roos moved ahead in the sixth inning, scoring a pair of runs and chasing Long to take a 4-3 lead.

Rhodes took control in the seventh as a single by senior Christine Hume, an error by the 'Roos, and Henry being hit by a pitch loaded the bases with no outs. Samuels drove a run home on a RBI groundout while freshman Shannon Tierney finished the game by blasting a RBI single for the win.

Tierney also earned the win in the circle, pitching two complete and allowing no runs on two hits. Long pitched five innings, allowing only two earned runs on five hits to go with four strikeouts.

Hume finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored while Bresler was 1-for-4 with two runs scored. Samuels went 1-for-2 with a pair of RBIs while Tierney was 1-for-1 with the game winning hit.

Rhodes moves to 5-5 on the season and will return to action at home next weekend as they welcome in Kenyon at 10 AM on Saturday followed by a 2 PM matchup against Webster.
