ATLANTA, Ga. - The Rhodes College softball team dropped a pair of matchups on Sunday afternoon as they fell 10-9 (8) to Averett before dropping a 2-0 decision to No. 4 Emory at the Emory Softball Field.
Against the Cougars, the Lynx put together 10 hits in the contest, but it would not be enough as they would drop the heartbreaker in extra innings.
After the visiting team scored one run in the first, Rhodes responded with a run in the bottom half of the first as sophomore
Kendall Henry smashed a double to right center to even the score.
The Cougars scored two runs in the top of the second to move ahead 3-1, but Rhodes responded with a huge four run second inning.Â
Rhodes loaded the bases with one out as junior
Kirsten Samuels, senior
Aubrey Blackstock, and sophomore
Katelynn Bresler all earned free passes. Junior
Allison Long came to the plate and ripped a double to left, scoring two, and tying the game at three.
Sophomore
Karrah Flores followed with a sacrifice fly to give Rhodes a lead followed by a RBI single by junior
Caroline Sutton.
However, Averett scored three runs in the fourth and two runs in the fifth to move ahead 8-5. Rhodes battled back as Bresler singled home a run in the sixth to make it a two run game.
In the seventh, Henry doubled for the second time to score one run and set up runners on second and third with one out. Rhodes got one run home thanks to an error, but could not push across the game winning run as the game moved into extras.
Playing the international tiebreaker rules, Averett pushed two across while Rhodes could only score on on a RBI single from freshman
Kayla Rose.
Henry finished 2-for-4 with two doubles and a pair of RBIs while Sutton and freshman
Olivia Jackson each had a pair of hits with Sutton driving in one and scoring twice. Samuels also scored a pair of runs on the afternoon to go with two stolen bases.
Long pitched six innings, allowing only four earned runs to nine hits, but five walks. Sophomore
Bri Maniscalco pitched two innings and allowed one earned run on two hits, but took the loss.
In the matchup against Emory, Maniscalco pitched a gem against one of the nation's elite teams, pitching all seven innings and allowing two runs on seven hits to go with a strikeout.
However, the offense struggled to get anything going, only coming away with three hits off the combination of Toko Miller and Brittany File. Henry was 1-for-2 with a walk while Jackson and sophomore
Jill Healy each had a hit.
Rhodes is now 3-5 after a tough weekend in Atlanta. They will return to action on Saturday as they welcome in Austin College for a double header at 12 and 2 PM.
