Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lynx escape Ozarks 61-59

Memphis - The University of the Ozarks entered Saturday's game against Rhodes women's basketball with a 1-7 record. Their only win came against the Lynx earlier in November. Rhodes seemed to run away with the lead in the second quarter but the Eagles bounced back and led for almost the entire fourth period before getting into foul trouble. Rhodes went 7-of-11 at the free throw line in the final frame to defeat Ozarks 61-59 and improve to 7-3 on the year.

The Lynx jumped out to a 6-0 lead before Ozarks went on a 6-1 run which was quickly diminished by Rhodes' three-point shooting. Three of Rhodes' last five buckets were treys heading into the second period. There, the Lynx continued their hot shooting from outside the arc, securing five straight long-range buckets on eight attempts, their only field goals of the period. After the first half Rhodes held a 37-27 advantage with nine of their last 10 field goal attempts coming from three-point range.

Rhodes went dry from long range in the second half on eight attempts where Ozarks out-scored Rhodes 32-24 including an 18-9 third period advantage. The Lynx made just seven field goals on 29 attempts while 10 of their 13 free throws came in the second quarter. Rhodes maintained a 46-45 lead after three quarters but the Eagles took a four-point lead to open the final period. The two teams were tied 54-54 after Erin Deery retrieved an offensive board near the arc and drove straight to the basket for the layup. Ozarks took a 57-54 advantage but Allie Young cut that lead to one on two free throws. An Eagle bucket and a Rhodes free throw put the teams two points apart when Lindsey Whiteside tied the game with a pair from the charity stripe. Young then secured the game-winning points on two free throws herself. The Eagles had 1.1 seconds on the clock and inbounded the ball from under the basket as time expired.

In the game, Whiteside and Deery both tallied 13 points with nine and eight rebounds respectively. Young finished with 12 points including five of her six free throws coming in the fourth period on just three minutes of play due to foul trouble. Alyssa Owens finished with 11 points, three assists and three treys. Owens, Deery and Whiteside went 8-of-17 from three-point range in the game.

For Ozarks, Memphis native Destinee Manning earned the only double-double of the game with 16 rebounds and 11 points.

Rhodes will enter 2018 on the road as they open conference play at Hendrix College on Tuesday, January 2nd with tip-off scheduled for 3 p.m.
