MEMPHIS, TENN.—Down by two after one quarter against Maryville College, the Rhodes Lynx women's basketball team surged into the lead with a 22-point second frame en route to a 69-56 victory on Saturday. The Lynx (5-1) held the visiting Scots (1-5) to 37% shooting from the floor, claiming their fourth victory in a row.
Four Lynx players scored in double figures, led by a 16-point effort from sophomore guard
ALYSSA OWENS. Senior
ERIN DEERY added 10 points of her own, and freshman
LINDSEY WHITESIDE contributed 14 points with six rebounds, six assists, and a pair of steals. Junior forward
ALLIE YOUNG found her rhythm late with a five-for-five effort in the second half, finishing with 14 points, seven boards, and four assists.
The victory gave the Lynx their second win in as many nights. As a result, they matched their win total from the 2016-2017 campaign in just their sixth game this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After Maryville opened with a 5-0 run in the game's first minute, Owens tied things up with a three-pointer and a layup on Rhodes' next two possessions. Maryville re-took the lead with another five-point streak, but the Lynx managed to stay close, trailing 19-17 after ten minutes.
Whiteside began the scoring in the second quarter with a go-ahead trifecta, marking the first of seven lead-changes in a back-and-forth period. Rhodes grabbed the lead for good with a put-back from junior forward
MORIAH MUHAMMAD off a miss by Deery at the 2:43 mark. The Lynx led 39-33 at the break, as Whiteside and Owens each tallied nine points. Muhammad led the inside attack with seven points and six rebounds in the opening half, helping Rhodes outscore Maryville in the paint 18-4 in that span.
After a Maryville trey to start the third quarter, Rhodes rattled off nine straight points to push their lead to twelve midway through the quarter. The Scots closed within five on a lay-up by Madison Maples (17 points) with 1:10 left in the period, but they would come no closer. Baskets by Whiteside and senior forward
JESSIE USTICK kept the Lynx in front by nine entering the final period, and the Lynx held a double-digit advantage for all but eight seconds of the last stanza.
