MEMPHIS - Rhodes College men's basketball opened the 2017-18 season at home, playing in the second game of the Four Points by Sheraton Tip-Off Tournament Saturday afternoon.
After holding onto a short 54-49 halftime lead, the Lynx pulled away from Vassar College to win 126-110.Â
Opening the game, Vassar scored the majority of their points breaking Rhodes' full-court press. The Lynx led 21-17 until Vassar posted nine straight points to take the lead. After trading leads back and forth, Rhodes regained the lead with just over a minute left in the first half (49-48) and held on for the rest of the half.
At halftime, for Vassar, Paul Grinde and Zach Bromfeld both just missed one field attempt on nine and seven attempts respectively. The Lynx held Grinde to just seven points in the second half who tallied the game-high 25 points.
For Rhodes,
Ian Harrison netted 10 points in the first half. The Lynx went 10-of-19 from three-point range in the second half, shooting with 52.6% accuracy. Rhodes held a 22-point lead with 6:04 to go in the game before
Bryce Berry finished with a Lynx-high 21 points. Berry went six-of-nine in the field and 8-of-10 at the free throw line.
All 12 of freshman
Andrew Evans' points were from long range, netting four of six shots.
Owen Galvin finished the game with 16 points on six-of-nine shooting. Harrison finished with 14 points and a team-high six rebounds. He connected on seven of nine shot attempts.
Anesu Nyawata was also on fire in the second half. He scored 11 points after the break including three of four treys on his way to 16 points in the win. Nyawata added six assists to his toals.
Kerry Love contributed to the win with seven assists.
Mitch Weatherford and Berry both recorded five steals.Â
Rhodes will play for the Tip-Off Championship against a 2-0 Johns Hopkins team on Sunday at 2 p.m. Â
