MEMPHIS - Despite an early 1-0 lead, the Rhodes College women's soccer team fell to the 22nd-ranked Texas-Tyler Patriots, 2-1, in their 2016 opener on Sunday afternoon at the Rhodes Soccer Complex.
In a terrific contest between two very good teams, the final statistics came out almost even for the two teams. The Patriots edged the Lynx in shots, 13-12, while holding a narrow 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Both teams had opportunities throughout the first half as sophomore
Olivia Marshall came up with some key saves to keep the game scoreless. Rhodes also got great looks at goal from junior
Emma Selner, sophomore
Rachel Giampapa, and freshman
Katelyn Curtis, but could not find the back of the net.
In the 44th minutes, the Lynx broke through as redshirt freshman
Jenny Neil sent the ball into the box where junior
Hope Elliott was able to get a piece of it and find the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
The Lynx would take that lead into the break, but the Patriots had a response as Brittany Matthews leveled the game with a goal in the 60th minutes.
Both team saw their chances to clinch the match in regulation, but key defensive stops, highlighted by goalkeepers Emily Hurley of Texas-Tyler and Marshall kept the game even throughout the second half. A pair of shots by junior
Rachel Coyle and Giampapa were both saved by Hurley to send the game into overtime.
The Patriots got the game winning goal in the 92nd minute as Matthews struck again to give her team the victory.
Giampapa led the offensive attack with three shots on the day while Selner and sophomore
Sydnie Schindler each had two shots on the day. Marshall finished the game with seven saves on the afternoon.
The Lynx fall to 0-1-0 on the season while the Patriots go to 1-1-0. Rhodes will hit the road for the first time in 2016 as they travel to St. Louis, Mo. for a 6 PM matchup with Principia.
