JACKSON, Miss. - Despite a tremendous come-from-behind effort to erase a 2-0 deficit, the Rhodes College men's scocer team would fall just short to defending SAA Champion Millsaps on Saturday evening in Jackson, 3-2.
Rhodes falls to 2-5-1 and 0-1 in SAA play while Millsaps goes to 4-4 overall and 1-0 in SAA play.
The two teams were even throughout the contest with Rhodes holding a slight 12-11 lead in shots and Millsaps holding a 7-6 advantage in shots on target. The Majors would also lead the way in corner kicks at 7-6.
Millsaps immediately took the lead 42 seconds into the game as Tore Schutt put the Lynx ahead 1-0. The Majors would make it a 2-0 game as Alex Bourland sent the Majors into the break with all of the momentum.
However, Rhodes had a response in the second half as they looked to cut into the deficit. Junior
Mark Robinson would score early in the half, putting home a goal in the 48th minute to make it a 2-1 contest.
In the 60th minute, the Lynx earned penalty kick that junior
William Mitchell would put away to even the match at two and completely swing the momentum in favor of the Lynx.
In spite of playing a terrific hat which saw the Lynx erase a two goal deficit and out shoot Millsaps 8-4 in the half, Schutt would break the Lynx hearts in the 80th minute with his second goal of the game to put the Majors back ahead 3-2.
Rhodes tried to find an equalizer, but would fall just short as they took a tough road loss.
Mitchell led the attack with three shots in the game while Mitchell and junior
Matt McKeand each added two shots a piece. Freshman
Boe Santos got the start in goal and finished with four saves on the afternoon.
The Lynx will turn around quickly for a Sunday afternoon matchup with Fisk at the Rhodes Soccer Field at 2 p.m.
