MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College football team could not overcome three turnovers in the second half as Berry would score 20 points, including 17 in the fourth quarter, to pull away from the Lynx and pick up a Southern Athletic Association win by the score of 34-10.
The Lynx fall to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in SAA play while Berry goes to 3-0 and 1-0 in SAA play. The Lynx offense finished with 357 total yards, but two interceptions and a fumble proved to be costly. Meanwhile, Berry racked up 433 yards including 312 through the air.
On the second play of the opening drive for Berry, Tate Adcock connected with Trey Ciresi on a busted play for a 60 yard touchdown to take the early 7-0 lead.
The Lynx would have a response on their opening drive, going 85 yards in eight plays as sophomore
P.J. Settles was able to find targets
Mason Windatt and
Brandon Box to move Rhodes down the field. Settles would connect with Box for a 44 yard touchdown to cap the drive and even the score at seven.
Berry put together an impressive 10 play drive, but the Lynx were able to force a missed field goal to keep the game even. Rhodes would travel into Berry territory on their next two possessions, but Rhodes could not connect on 4th and short on either drive, resulting in a turnover on down.
On the last failed 4th down attempt, Berry took over in their own territory and was able to move down the field in six plays as Adcock connected with Ciresi for the second time, this time from 30 yards out, to make it 14-7. Ciresi had catches of 17, 13, and 30 on the drive to put Berry ahead.
After Rhodes punted on their next possession, the Vikings put together a 13 play drive, getting deep into Rhodes territory and finding themselves on the one. The Rhodes defense stood tall, as the trio of sophomore
Charlie Hughes, sophomore
Duke Sherrell, and junior
Elliott Tostrud pushed the Vikings back on their first three downs. Berry lined up to go for it on 4th-and-goal and Slade Dale was sacked for a 10 yard loss by Sherrell to force a turnover on downs.
That drive took almost seven minutes of clock and the stop left little time for the Lynx as the game went into halftime at 14-7.
In the second half, neither team could get much going early in the third quarter, but a pair of interceptions later in the quarter would swing the momentum. However, the Lynx defense remained tough to hold Berry to one field goal and keep it at 17-7 through three quarters.
Berry started the fourth quarter with a field goal to make it 20-7 as the Lynx looked to move quickly to get within one possession. However, a huge sack and force fumble gave Berry the ball back. On the next play, Dale found Ciresi, who caught his third touchdown of the day, this time from 24 yards out, to put the game out of reach at 27-7.
A Chris Lilly touchdown receptions from Dade make it 34-7, while Rhodes got a field goal later in the quarter from 39 yards out from junior
Kyle Edmiston as the game would end in a 34-10 loss for Rhodes.
Settles finished 15-for-33 for 217 yards and a touchdown as well as two interceptions. Senior
Sam Yarborough checked in late in the game and went 10-for-23 for 107 yards.
Senior
Roc Sherrell had 12 carries for 47 yards in his first action of 2016 while Box led all receivers with nine catches for 144 yards and a score. Freshman
Carter King added five catches for 49 yards while Windatt had three catches for 42 yards.
Defensively, Hughes led the charge with nine tackles while D. Sherrell and junior
Sam McLain each had six tackles. Sherrell and senior
Jack Ingalls each had two tackles for loss and a sack while freshman
Jacob Andersen had a forced fumble and sophomore
Allante Carr with a recovery.
The Lynx will prepare for their bye week this upcoming weekend before returning on October 1st for a matchup on the road against their biggest rivals, Sewanee. The two teams will play for the Orgill Cup which Rhodes has won the last four seasons. Kickoff is set for 1 PM.
