MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College women's lacrosse team jumped all over arch-rival Sewanee, taking a 6-0 lead in the first 15 minutes and leading by as much as 10-2 en route to a dominant victory on Senior Day at Mason Field.
The Lynx out shot the Tigers, 24-15, and held a 14-11 advantage in shots on target. Rhodes held an 11-5 advantage in draw controls and forced 14 Sewanee turnovers as the Tigers were only 8-for-14 in clear attempts.
Rhodes came out red hot as sophomore
Ashley Doyle scored the opening goal of the game for a 1-0 lead. Senior
Morgan Fuller made it a 2-0 game followed by goals from sophomore
Kendall Cunningham and freshman
Annika Hedlund. Junior
Ashley Dill scored back-to-back goals as Rhodes took a 6-0 lead with 14:23 to go in the first half.
Sewanee got a pair of goals late in the half, but sophomore
Maggie Rippeto answered with a goal with three seconds on the clock to keep the all momentum with the Lynx as they led 7-2 at the break.
Rhodes would control the clock and would go on to score three straight goals to begin the second half to move ahead 10-2. Hedlund, Rippeto, and Cunningham all scored their second goals of the game. The Tigers closed the game with three straight goals, but it was not enough as Rhodes cruised to a 10-5 victory.
Rippeto had a terrific afternoon, going for two goals and four assists for six total points. Cunningham, Dill, and Hedlund all had two goals while Dill had two assists. Doyle also added an assist on the day.
Defensively, sophomore
Rachel Windmueller was terrific with four caused turnovers while senior
Sam Vanover added two. Doyle, Dill, and Fuller all had three ground balls while Doyle added five draw controls. Sophomore
Katherine Tooley came away with six saves on the afternoon.
Rhodes moves to 10-4 overall and 4-1 in the SAA. They can clinch at least a share of the SAA Regular Season Title in their season finale next weekend as they battle Berry College on the road. Start time is scheduled for 1 PM ET.
