BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Despite a great effort from senior
Daniel Morris, two errors in the first and another error in the fifth put four unearned runs on the board as Birmingham-Southern won the first game of Southern Athletic Association Baseball Championship Series, 4-0, over Rhodes College.
Morris pitched eight complete, allowing seven hits and no earned runs. He did walk five batters, but did a nice job working out of jams to keep the score within reach for the Lynx offense.
BSC took advantage of two Rhodes errors to take an early 3-0 lead. The Lynx struggled to figured out ace Ryan Gaines of the Panthers, but begin to finally get some base runners after the fourth inning. However, Gaines kept the Lynx in check as they couldn't get a run across the board.
The Panthers added another run in the fifth to move ahead 4-0. Morris kept his cool and kept the Panthers down, but the Rhodes offense could not muster anything, eventually dropping the first game of a best of three series for the SAA Championship.
Sophomore
Levi Greenberg finished 1-for-3 with a double and a walk while junior
Bill Munson, senior
Marcus Moreland, junior
Ryan Olive, and senior
Nathan Foshee all had a hit on the afternoon.
Rhodes will have to win the next two games in Birmingham to claim the SAA Championship and a ticket to the NCAA Regionals. Game two is set to begin at 1:40 today in Birmingham. If Rhodes is victorious, game three will take place Sunday at a time to be determined.
