MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College softball team dropped a close Southern Athletic Association contest to the No. 11 Berry Vikings, 4-2, on Sunday afternoon as they could not avoid the sweep.
The Lynx found themselves in 4-0 hole after four innings of play, but Rhodes battled back in the bottom of the inning on a solo homerun by Senior Rachel Pewitt and an RBI single by sophomore Kirsten Samuels to get within two runs.
Berry was looking to add another run in the top of the seventh, but senior catcher Rachel Pewitt denied the sliding runner at the plate, a huge play that kept the Lynx within two.
The Lynx were able to shut out the Vikings the rest of the contest, but despite a good effort, were not able to add any runs of their own, dropping the contest to the Berry Vikings.
Sophomore Caroline Reilly took the loss, pitching 6.2 innings before being relieved in the sixth inning by Sophomore Allison Long.
Rhodes moves to 18-3 overall and 4-11 in SAA competition. The Lynx will be back in action Tuesday April 5th when they take on Lemoyne-Owens in a home double header.
