COLLIERVILLE, Tenn. - Sophomore
Caroline Reilly drove in the game-tying run in the bottom of the seventh with two outs while junior
Christine Hume belted the game winning single in the eighth inning as No. 6 Rhodes defeated No. 4 Centre, 5-4 (8), to stay alive in the SAA Championship.
Centre took a 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a two RBI double as sophomore
Allison Long was chased in the first inning. Freshman
Bri Maniscalco kept the damage at two runs early on.
The Lynx tied the game in the third off an error by the Colonel defense followed by a sacrifice fly to right from freshman
Kendall Henry. Rhodes took a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning as junior
Caroline Sutton ripped a RBI double down the left field line.
However, Centre got one run back in the fifth and went ahead 4-3 in the top of the seventh as they looked as though they were going to eliminate Rhodes.
Hume led off the bottom of the seventh with a single followed by a sacrifice bunt by senior
Rachel Pewitt. One batter later, Reilly came to the plate and laced a RBI single to tie the game and send the crowd into a frenzy.
As the game went into extras, Reilly, now the pitcher, put the Colonels down in order. After two quick outs, Sutton reached on an error followed by a single throught the right side by senior
Erin Parker. Hume then stepped to the plate and ripped a pitch down the left field line for the game winning hit.
Hume finished 3-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored while Sutton was 2-for-4 with a RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore
Kirsten Samuels went 3-for-4 on the day with two runs scored.
After Long only made it through 0.1 innings, Maniscalco pitched 5.2 innings, allowing one run off three hits. Reilly earned the win after pitching the final two innings, allowing one run on two hits.
Rhodes returns to action this evening as they go into another elimination game with Hendrix at 6 PM. If they are victorious, they will take on the loser of BSC and Berry with a spot in the SAA Championship Game on the line.
