COLLIERVILLE, Tenn. - The Rhodes College softball team saw its 2016 season come to a close one game out from the SAA Championship game, falling to top-seeded Birmingham-Southern, 5-3. In the previous game, the Lynx won an absolute thriller over Hendrix, 7-4, in eight innings.
Against the Warriors, the game was scoreless as freshman
Bri Maniscalco was locked in, going through the first four innings unscathed.
In the fifth inning, freshman
Jill Healy looked as if she was going to give the Lynx a 1-0 lead with a deep ball to left center, but Hendrix's Samantha Schaefer made an unbelievable catch to rob Healy of a home run and keep the game scoreless.
The Warriors answered with two runs in the fifth to take a 2-0 advantage, but Rhodes got one back in the sixth inning as senior
Rachel Pewitt scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit in half.
However, Hendrix scored two runs in the bottom half of the sixth to make it a 4-1 game as Rhodes came down to their final three outs. Junior Caroline Sutto and senior
Erin Parker reached with one out in the inning. After a ground ball for the second out, Pewitt ripped a ball down the right field line to make it a 4-3 game. Freshman
Kendall Henry tied the game at four with a double.
After putting Hendrix down in the seventh, sophomore
Caroline Reilly smoked a double down the left field line followed by a home run to center from freshman
Jill Healy for a 6-4 lead. Later in the inning, Rhodes added another run on a RBI single from Pewitt.
Reilly finished the game off in the eighth inning to give the Lynx their second win of the day and move within one game of a spot in the SAA Championship Game.
Pewitt finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs while Henry added a 3-for-5 day with a RBI. Senior
Erin Parker, junior
Caroline Sutton, and junior
Christine Hume all had a pair of hits with Hume scoring two runs. Reilly earned the win, going four complete and allowing only two runs on two hits.
The Lynx turned right back around and took on Birmingham-Southern, scoring three runs in the first two innings behind a RBI single from freshman
Kendall Henry and a Panthers error in the first and a solo shot to center from freshman
Karrah Flores in the second.
However, BSC crept back into the game, tying it at three, and eventually taking advantage of two Rhodes errors in the sixth inning to take a 5-3 lead. Rhodes would see its season come to a close as they eventually fell just short.
Flores finished 3-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored while Henry added a pair of base hits including a double. Sutton added the only other hit for the Lynx. Sophomore
Allison Long got the start while Maniscalco was tagged with the loss despite allowing no earned runs and only one hit.
The Lynx closed their season 25-20 including an extremely strong showing at the SAA Championship.
