Lynx Softball Drops a Pair of Conference Matchups to No. 11 Berry

MEMPHIS – The Rhodes College softball team dropped a pair of Southern Athletic Association contests to the Berry Vikings, 10-1 and 11-4, on Satuday afternoon at the Rhodes College Softball Complex.

In the first contest against the Vikings, Rhodes found themselves in a 4-0 hole after three innings of play as Berry was able to get to starter Allison Long, but the Lynx went on to hold the Vikings scoreless for the next two innings.

Berry added six in the sixth inning, but the lynx got a run back in bottom of the inning. Freshman Jill Healy doubled to left field and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Kirsten Samuels. Junior Christine Hume was able to reach second on an error, which scored Healy.

Sophomore Allison Long took the loss, going five complete before being relieved by sophomore Caroline Reilly in the sixth.

In the second game, the Lynx allowed five in the first , but got a run back in the bottom of the inning, when freshman Kendall Henry put the ball into play, scoring senior Erin Parker.

The Lynx found themselves in a 9-1 hole entering the fourth inning, but were able to shutout Berry in the inning, stranding two Vikings on base. The lynx started the inning off hot, a leadoff solo homerun by sophomore Caroline Reilly was followed by a single to left-center by freshman Karrah Flores. Unfortunately, Berry was able hold a Lynx runner on base.

The Lynx battled back in the fifth after junior Christine Hume, who reached base on balls and stole second, was advanced to third on a bunt by senior Rachel Pewitt, who then stole second to put two in scoring position. Sophomore Kirsten Samuels had a two-RBI double down the right field line to bring the Lynx within 5.

A sacrifice bunt by Kirsten Samuels put two in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh, and a RBI single by Caroline Reilly scored Hume.

Freshman Bri Maniscalco took the loss, and pitched the entire game for the Lynx.

Rhodes moves to 18-12 overall and 4-10 in SAA competition. They will look to salvage a game in the three game series tomorrow afternoon as they battle the Vikings at 12 PM CST.
