Lynx Softball Sends Seniors Out with Win Over Southwestern

MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College softball team wrapped up the regular season on Sunday afternoon as they honored three seniors to a 4-2 win over the Southwestern Pirates. They would play 10th-ranked Emory later in the day and fall, 8-1.

After honoring seniors Emily Cerrito, Rachel Pewitt, and Erin Parker, the Lynx jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first as Pewitt singled to center followed by an infield single to score another run by Cerrito.

Southwestern would get a run back in the fourth, but junior Christine Hume made a big impact in the bottom half of the fifth, stepping to the plate and blasting a two-run homer into left center to extend the lead to 4-1.

The Pirates threatened in the seventh, scoring a run and loading the bases up as they looked to extend the game. However, freshman Bri Maniscalco dug in and earned her 10th win of the season, pitching a complete game and allowing two runs off nine hits to go with two strikeouts.

Hume would finished 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a two runs scored while Pewitt was 2-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored. Cerrito and Parker each added hits with Cerrito driving one in and Parker scoring a run.

In the second game, Rhodes hung tight with nationally-ranked Emory, trailing 2-0 after the third as they mainintained that deficit until late in the game. However, the Eagles scored one in the sixth and five in the seventh to break the game open.

Freshman Haley Rath drove in a run in the seventh, but the Lynx could not get back into it, eventually falling.

Sophomore Allison Long was tagged with the loss, pitching 3.1 innings while Maniscalco pitched the last 3.2 innings. Offensively, Pewitt, Rath, Cerrito, sophomore Kirsten Samuels, and freshman Karrah Flores had the only hits in the game. Junior Aubrey Blackstock added a run scored.

Rhodes finishes the regular season at 22-18 overall. They will move to the Southern Athletic Association Championship as the No. 6 seed and will take on No. 3 Millsaps on Friday at 12 PM at W.C. Johnson Park in Collierville. Be sure and check rhodeslynx.com as more information will be added about the SAA Softball Championship hosted by Rhodes College.
