BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - In the quarterfinals of the Southern Athletic Association Championship, the Rhodes College men's lacrosse team held a late 10-9 lead, but the Panthers scored with 0.2 seconds to play to tie it and won the game in the first 32 seconds of OT to advance to the final and end the Lynx season on Saturday afternoon.
The Lynx were out shot 38-23 and 23-14 in shots on goal, but Rhodes forced 16 BSC turnovers on the afternoon. The Panthers held a 28-25 advantage in ground balls and were 16-for-24 in face offs.
Rhodes jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first behind goals from junior
John Wancowicz and freshman
Tyler Milwit. The Panthers responded with three goals in the quarter, but freshman
John Tooher scored with 57 seconds left in the quarter to make it 3-3 at the end of one.
After BSC went up 4-3, sophomore
Ryan Fennelly and senior
Cooper Robinson scored back-to-back goals to make ita 5-4 game. However, the Panthers scored two goals in the final four minutes to take a 6-5 lead at the break.
BSC extended that lead to 8-5 with a pair of goals to open the third quarter. Milwit scored his second goal of the game to cut the deficit to 8-6 as the game moved into the final period.
Sophomore
Tommy Reingruber scored to make it a one goal game, but the Panthers had an answer, scoring to make it 9-7 with 5:48 to go. Tooher, Milwit, and Tooher again scored three straight goals in the final four minutes to stun the Birmingham crowd and retake the lead at 10-9.
It looked as though Rhodes was going to wrap the game up, but a late turnover gave the Panthers one final gasp, which they answered with a goal with 0.2 seconds remaining to tie it. The Panthers carried that momentum into OT where they scored 32 seconds into the period for the win.
Milwit and Tooher each finished with hat tricks with Milwit adding an assist and three ground balls while Fennelly finished with a goal and three assists. Robinson also added an assist on the day.
Defensively, Wancowicz finished with two caused turnovers and seven ground balls while sophomore
John Snyder had two caused turnovers and three ground balls. Freshman
Henry Hasbrouck had a caused turnover and three ground balls while freshman
Cameron Link had 12 saves on the day.
Rhodes concludes their season at 11-5 and set new marks and standards for the program going forward. The Lynx will move into their offseason program, looking to improve moving into the 2017 season.
