Lynx Softball Splits Second Day at Rebel Classic in Florida

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Rhodes College softball team split on Wednesday afternoon at the Rebel Classic in Kissimmee, Fla., dropping their first contest to No. 17 Central, 12-9, before responding with an extra inning victory over Westminster (Pa.), 8-6 (8).

In the first outing, Rhodes jumped out to a 2-0 lead over the Dutch, as junior Christine Hume was caught stealing, but still scored senior Erin Parker for the 1-0 lead. Freshman Kendall Henry would score on an error by the catcher later the inning to increase the lead.

Central went on to scored 10 runs in the second and third innings to race ahead 10-2. However, Rhodes began to chip away, getting a run in the third off a Pewitt sac fly before scoring four in the fourth to make it a 10-7 game. Sophomore Maggie Mitchell drove in a run on a sac fly with the bases loaded while Hume had a two RBI triple. Henry would then reach on an error, scoring Hume.

A RBI single from freshman Jill Healy made it a 10-8 game through five complete. However, Central got one in the sixth and one of the seventh to extend their lead while Rhodes could only muster one run on a Kylle Cahill-Patray RBI single as they fell 12-9.

Freshman Bri Maniscalco took the loss, allowing 10 runs in 2.2 innings pitcher on only seven hits. Sophomore Allison Long pitched in relief, going 4.1 innings and allowing two runs on six hits.

Hume finished 2-for-4 with a doubles, triple, two RBIs, and two runs scored while Henry was 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored. Long also went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored while Healy was 3-for-4 with a doubles, a RBI, and a run scored.

In the second game, back-to-back RBI doubles from Pewitt and sophomore Caroline Reilly gave Rhodes a 2-0 lead while freshman Kaitlynn Bresler and Healy drove in two more runs in the first for the 4-0 lead early on.

The Titans would score four runs of their own in the third to even things up, but Rhodes pushed ahead on a Henry RBI single to lead 5-4.

Two more runs crossed for Westminster in the fourth to move ahead for the first time in the game, 6-5, but a RBI double from Hume in the sixth tied the score back at six and forced extra innings.

With the international tie breaker in effect, sophomore Kirsten Samuels drove home freshman Haley Rath to give Rhodes a 7-6 lead. Shortly after, Samuels stole second and would come all the way around to score on an error to lead 8-6.

Maniscalco finished things off in relief to earn her sixth win of the season and move the Lynx to 12-4 overall. She pitched 4.1 innings in relief, allowing no runs on three hits and striking out two. Reilly got the start, going 3.2 innings and allowing six runs on six hits.

Hume went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a RBI, and a run scored while eight different Lynx came away with a base hit. Maniscalco was 1-for-2 from the plate while Samuels was 1-for-4 with the go-ahead RBI and a run scored.

The Lynx will take one day off tomorrow before returning to action on Friday in Florida. They will take on Hiram at 9:00 AM ET followed by Bridgewater at 11:15 AM ET. Live stats will be available on the Stretch Internet portal page.
