MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College softball team returned home on Saturday afternoon and snapped a three game losing streak with a dominating pair of wins over the Sewanee Tigers, 10-2 (5) and 9-1 (5), earning their first two Southern Athletic Association victories of the season.
Rhodes jumped out to a 3-0 in the first inning of game one as senior
Rachel Pewitt grounded out to drive home the first run of the game followed by a two-run blast from freshman
Karrah Flores.
The Lynx increased that lead to 6-0 after back-to-back-to-back hits from junior
Christine Hume, freshman
Kendall Henry, and Pewitt with Hume and Pewitt both hitting doubles.
The Tigers got on the board in the third, scratching across a pair of runs, but Rhodes responded in the fourth, using the basepaths to increase their lead. After a RBI single from freshman
Katelynn Bresler, sophomore
Caroline Reilly would come around to score on a wild pitch while freshman
Jill Healy and Bresler pulled off a double steal to make it a 9-2 game. Henry would end it in the fifth as she scored on a wild pitch for the 10-2 elimination win.
Reilly earned the win for Rhodes, pitching 5.0 innings and allowing only four hits while striking out four in the contest.
Pewitt and Flores each finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs while Flores had a double and homerun on the day and scored two runs. Henry would cross the plate three times while Healy went 1-for-1 with a triple and a run scored. The Lynx stole nine bases on the afternoon including two from Henry and Healy.
In the second game, the Lynx again put three runs on the board in the first as Pewitt singled to right for the 1-0 lead. Hume would come across for the second run of the game on a pass ball while Flores grounded out to score Pewitt.
In the third, three continued to be the magic number as Rhodes tacked on three more runs as Henry and Pewitt each singled home a run while freshman
Bri Maniscalco grounded out to drive in a run and make it a 6-0 game.
Sewanee added one in the fourth, but Rhodes had an answer with three more runs in the bottom half as Henry drove in one run while sophomore
Allison Long singled to left to score two and move the lead to 9-1.
It was all Maniscalco needed as she earned the complete game, allowing only five hits in 5.0 innings while striking out five.
Parker, Hume, and Pewitt all went 2-for-2 with two runs scored while Pewitt had a pair of RBIs. Henry went 1-for-3 with two RBIs while Long was 1-for-1 with two RBIs. Healy also added a 2-for-2 day while senior
Emily Cerrito and freshman
Kylle Cahill-Patray each scored a run.
Rhodes moves to 8-3 overall and 2-3 in SAA play. They will look to go for the series sweep tomorrow afternoon against the Tigers with a 12 PM start time at the Rhodes Softball Complex.
