MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College men's lacrosse team scored five goals in the first quarter while freshman
Tyler Milwit scored a career-high five goals on the evening to lead Rhodes to a 10-5 win over Hendrix in their Southern Athletic Association opener.
The Lynx outshot the Warriors, 29-20, including a 10-5 advantage in the first and a 10-3 advantage in the fourth qurter. Rhodes had 17 shots on goal to Hendrix's eight. Rhodes forced 23 turnovers on the evening and held the Warriors to 11 out of 21 on clear attempts.
It was all Lynx in the first quarter as goals by sophomore
Justin Powers and senior
Matt Vavrek gave the Lynx a 2-0 lead in the first two minutes. One minute later, with a man down, Milwit scored his first goal of the game to give Rhodes a three goal lead.
Junior
Ryan Fennelly added a goal while Milwit scored his second of the game to give the Lynx a commanding 5-0 lead after one.
Hendrix opened the second quarter up with a pair of goals to close the gap back to three, but Milwit responded with two more goals, one coming with a man up, to go back ahead 7-2. The Warriors scored one with less than a minute to play before half to go into break down 7-3.
Hendrix scored three straight goals in the third quarter and suddenly made it a game at 7-5. However, junior
Mike Knudsen came away with a huge caused turnover and followed it up with a goal in transition to ahead 8-5.
With less than 10 seconds to play in the quarter, Milwit connected with goal number five to carry all momentum into the final period, up 9-5. Fennelly would add another goal late in the fourth as Rhodes was victorious, 10-5.
Milwit also had two caused turnovers on his big evening while Fennelly finished with three goals and two assists. Junior
Matthew Jones had a big game, finishing with four groundballs, an assist, and a caused turnover while freshman
David Perez had an assist on the evening.
Defensively, sophomore
John Snyder finished with four caused turnovers while junior
John Wancowicz went for three caused turnovers and three groundballs. Freshman
Henry Hasbrouck had three groundballs while sophomore
Steven Yowan and freshman
John Tooher each had two. Sophomore
Cameron Link didn't have much come his way on target, finishing with three saves.
Rhodes moves to 8-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play. They will prepare for a tough road test on Saturday as they play their first conference away match against Birmingham-Southern. Faceoff is set for 6 PM.
