BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - After moving ahead 6-5 in the top of the fourth inning, Rhodes College softball allowed nine straight runs in the next two innings, eventually falling to the Birmingham-Southern Panthers, 14-6 (5) on Sunday afternoon.
The Lynx hopped out to a 1-0 lead after junior
Christine Hume doubled to right. One batter later, senior
Rachel Pewitt singled to left to drive in her first run of the game. BSC would respond in the bottom of the first with two runs follwed by another run in the second to move ahead 3-1.
In the top of third, Hume doubled again, this time to lead the inning off. One batter later, Pewitt stepped into the box and hit her fourth home run of the season, scorching one over the left field wall to tie the game at three.
The Panthers again regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning, this time using a long ball of their own, to move ahead 5-3.
In the fourth, freshman
Jill Healy and sophomore
Kirsten Samuels led the inning off with back-to-back singles. After a fielder's choice, Hume stepped into the box and lifted a long ball over the left field wall to give Rhodes a 6-5 advantage.
However, from there, it was all Panthers as they scored six in the fourth and three more in the fifth to force elimination and sweep the Lynx.
Hume finished the day 3-for-3 with two doubles, a home run, two RBIs, and three runs scored while Pewitt went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs. Samuels had a hit and a run scored while Healy and freshman Katelynn Bressler added the only other hits of the game.
Sophomore
Caroline Reilly earned the start and took a no decision while sophomore
Allison Long (1-1) took the loss in relief.
Rhodes moves to 6-3 overall and 0-3 in Southern Athletic Association play. The Lynx will return home next weekend as they welcome in the Sewanee Tigers for a three game series. The series begins on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 12 PM.
