Lynx Men Season Ends in Loss to Sewanee at SAA Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Rhodes College men's basketball team's 2015-16 season came to a close on Friday evening as they fell to Sewanee in the quarterfinals of the Southern Athletic Association Championships, 62-57.

Rhodes shot 23-for-56 (41.1%) from the field and 6-for-15 (40.0%) from downtown. Meanwhile, the Tigers went 18-for-39 (46.2%) from the field and 4-for-11 (36.4%) from deep. The Lynx forced 22 turnovers while only giving it away 12 times and held a 22-10 advantage in points off turnovers. However, Rhodes struggled on the boards as they were outrebounded 38-21.

Early in the first half, the duo of juniors Keyshawn Butts and Daniel Galvin pushed the Lynx out to a 9-4 lead, but a 6-0 run by the Tigers gave them their first lead of the game at 10-9. 

Rhodes responded with a 10-2 run led by junior Brennan Sullivan, junior JJ Weir, and freshman Will McIntyre to go ahead 19-12 around the midway point in the first half. Sewanee responded by closing the half on a 21-5 run to move take a 33-24 lead into the break.

The Tigers would lead by as many as 11 throughout the second half as Rhodes tried to chip away at the deficit. With 8:30 to go, junior Andrew Lowrie buried a 3-pointer to move the Lynx within six.

Sewanee moved the lead back out to four after a pair of free throws, but back-to-back baskets from Sullivan and Galvin made it a 49-45 game.

The Tigers went ahead by six, but back-to-back scored from Weir, including a fastbreak bucket on a steal, make it a two point game. After another jumper from Sewanee, junior Tyler Gee hit a 3-pointer from the wing to make it a 53-52 game with 3:08 the play.

After a three by Sewanee and a layup from Galvin, Rhodes had a chance to tie or take the lead with 2:05 to go. However, after Rhodes failed to score, Sewanee responded with a back breaking 3-pointer to move up by five and all but seal the win. Rhodes tried to keep the game alive, but it was not enough as they eventually fell to their rivals.

Galvin led the way with 16 points on the evening while Sullivan added 10 points and two steals. Gee had a game-high six steals to go with seven points and six boards while Weir scored eight off the bench to go with six assists and two steals.

Cody Jones led the way for Sewanee with 16 points while Keshonn Carter chipped in 14 points.

Rhodes finishes the season with a record of 10-16.
