MEMPHIS - After scoring 27 total runs on Friday, the Rhodes College softball came back on Saturday to score 25 total runs in a 12-4 (5) win over Oberlin College and a 13-5 (5) win over Greenville College to complete the sweep of the Panthers.
In game one against Oberlin, the Lynx came out a little slow, surrendering three runs in the first to fall behind. However, senior
Rachel Pewitt made it a one run game with one swing in the bottom half of the first, belting her first home run of the season deep down the left field line.
Rhodes would score four in the second inning to move ahead 6-3 behind RBIs from freshman
Kirsten Samuels, senior
Erin Parker, and freshman
Kendall Henry. Samuels would drive in her second run of the game in the third inning while Rhodes took advantage of Oberlin errors to move ahead 8-3 after three.
Leading 10-4 in the bottom of the fifth, junior
Christine Hume triple to left to score a run followed by the game-winning RBI single from Henry to force elimination and win 12-4 in five innings.
Pewitt finished 2-for-2 on the day with two RBIs including a double, home run, and two runs scores while Henry and Samuels each had a pair of hits and pair of runs driven in. Parker and Hume each had two hits and scored two runs while Samuels also scored twice. Freshman
Jill Healy was 1-for-3 with a double and run scored on the afternoon. The Lynx stole eight bases in the game as Parker and sophomore
Caroline Reilly each had two.
Sophomore
Allison Long picked up her first win of the season to go to 1-0, pitching a complete game with three strikeouts and only two earned runs allowed.
In the second game of the afternoon, Greenville raced out to a 4-0 lead going into the bottom of the third. With two outs, Hume reached on an error and Henry and Reilly walked to load the bases for Pewitt. Pewitt hit a monster grand slam to tie the game at four and swing the momentum in favor of the Lynx.
The Panthers; however, regained the lead in the fourth, but Rhodes again had an answer. With two out and two on, Hume stepped to the plate and blasted her first home run of the season to put the Lynx ahead for good at 7-5.
The Lynx broke it open in the fifth inning, scoring six run to force elimination as Henry drove in the game winning two RBI single for the 13-5 victory.
Pewitt finished 2-for-3 with four RBIs and two runs scored while Hume went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Henry drove in a pair of runs while Samuels and Parker each scored a run. The Lynx stole six bases in the second game to clinch the sweep over the Panthers.
Rhodes is now 4-0 on the season and will look to go for the sweep over Oberlin tomorrow. Due to weather in the forecast, the doubleheader against Oberlin will move to a 10 AM and 12 PM start time.
