Women's Hoops Offense Sputters in Second Half in Loss to Otterbein

MEMPHIS - Despite shooting 41% in the first half including seven three pointers and holding a 31-30 lead, the Rhodes College women's basketball team had no answers in the second half as the Otterbein Cardinals stormed back to outscore Rhodes 36-16 in the second half for a 66-47 win.

The Lynx only shot 21% in the second half and finished the game shooting 31% from the field. The were 36% from behind the arch, but committed 25 turnovers on the afternoon as big second half run by the Cardinals proved to be costly. Otterbein shot 47% from the field and 35% from deep.

Rhodes hot shooting gave them the lead in the first half as they struggled with turnovers throughout the first 20 minutes. The Cardinals went ahead 10-4 in the first but 3-pointers from senior Blaire Smith and junior Erin Deery made it an 11-10 deficit at the end of one.

In the second quarter, Otterbein built a lead out to 25-18, but Rhodes began their comeback behind stellar play from Deery, connecting on a pair of 3's followed by a jumper from junior Jessie Ustick and a three from freshman Ashley Foret to cut the deficit to 30-29. Deery gave Rhodes the lead before the half on a floater as the Lynx took a 31-30 advantage at the break.

A pair of 3-pointers from Smith and Deery pushed the lead out to 37-30 in the first two minutes of the second half. However, the Cardinals went on 16-2 run extending into the fourth quarter to take a 46-39 advantage.

The Lynx kept it within five until Abby Miduri hit three straight 3-pointers to take a 57-46 lead. It was all part of a 15-1 run to close the game and give Otterbein the 19 point win over Rhodes.

Deery finished with a career-high 19 points while Ustick and Smith each had six points and two steals. Smith tacked on five assists while Deery added three. Senior Bailey Kramer had eight rebounds on the afternoon including four offensive boards.
