CONWAY, Ark. - The No. 4 seed Rhodes College volleyball team saw their season come to a close on Friday afternoon as they fell to No. 5 seed Centre College Colonels in the quarterfinals of the SAA Volleyball Championship.
The Lynx finished with 56 kills to 26 errors in the match for a hitting percentage of .169. The Rhodes defense was solid on Saturday afternoon, holding Centre to a .119 hitting percentage. Rhodes had 106 digs to 76, but Centre was able to capitalize throughout the afternoon to pick up the win in four sets.
It was a back-and-forth first set as Rhodes was able to build up an 18-15 lead after the match was tied at 15. The Lynx was able to keep their lead at 21-18, but three straight Colonel points tied the set at 21.Â
Centre moved ahead 23-22 before Rhodes rolled back to take a 24-23 lead with a set point on the line. However, the Colonels scored four of the final five points to win the set 27-25.Â
Led by junior
Elasha Williams, sophomore
Ellen Platt, and sophomore
Caroline Perlis, Rhodes started the second set on fire as they went ahead 8-0. The Lynx pushed that lead out to 16-5 as they were in complete control. Rhodes finished the set strong to win the set 25-10 and even the match.
Despite a strong effort in the final two sets, the Lynx would fall just short, losing the third set by the score of 25-23, and the fourth set by the score of 25-21.
Sophomore
Katherine Bolyard finished with 15 kills while Platt added 12 and Williams had 11. Sophomore
Hannah McCarty had a great day as she finished with 34 assists. Bolyard also had three service aces.
Defensively, senior
Catherine Grimes finished her career with a bang, finishing with 30 digs while Williams had 26. Williams also had five blocks while Perlis added four.
Rhodes finishes the 2016 season with a 12-12 record. Two seniors depart in Grimes and
Alex Overstreet after tremendous contributions to the program and the Lynx will move into the offseason to prepare for the 2017 season.
