MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College men's basketball team outscored the Louisiana College Wildcats 64-46 in the second half to erase an eight point halftime deficit and earn their third win of the season, 107-97.
The Lynx shot 39 of 83 (47%) from the field, offsetting the 38% first half shooting with a blazing with 56% shooting in the second half. The Lynx connected on 20 three pointers in the game and forced 27 Wildcat turnovers. Rhodes got 65 points off their bench and 28 points off turnovers.
Louisiana College shot 58% for the game, but Rhodes was able to cool them off from 63% to 53% in between halves and held them to 20% shooting from deep in the second half.
The Lynx jumped out to a 26-20 lead before cold shooting nipped Rhodes as the Wildcats went on a 14-0 run to take a 34-26 advantage. Rhodes responded with a 10-2 run behind a pair of buckets from senior
Tyler Gee and three's from sophomore
Daniel Darst and freshman
Jake Nestlehutt, but an 11-2 run put Louisiana College back ahead by nine and ended up taking a 51-43 lead at the break.
Rhodes almost immediately cut the deficit to two behind baskets from junior
Anesu Nyawata, freshman Nick de Feria, and Gee. Louisiana College clung to their small lead for a few possessions before a Nyawata three tied the game at 63 at the 13:42 mark.
Louisiana College pushed their lead back out to four and continued to hang on, but the three ball remained red hot for Rhodes as Nyawata struck again along with Gee. Rhodes finally took the lead back at the 10:15 mark on a three from senior
Brennan Sullivan.
Leading 76-75, Rhodes went on a 9-0 run as a trio of freshman got involved in
Bryce Berry,
Kendrick Ashby, and
Mitch Weatherford while junior
Ian Harrison went to work in the paint as the Lyn suddenly held a 10 point lead with around eight to play.
Harrison would score eight points in the final nine minutes while the Lynx to rain three's, leading by as many as 14 as they pulled away and earned the 10 point win over a very athletic Wildcat team.
Nywata led the attack with 16 points on 6 of 9 shooting including four 3's while Gee and Nestlehutt each scored 15. Gee shot 7 of 9 from the field and had five boards and two blocks while Nestlehutt connected on five 3's. Sullivan scored 11 while Harrison picked up his fourth straight double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Sophomore
Daniel Darst had seven assists while senior
J.J. Weir and freshman
Mitch Weatherford each had six assists. Nyawata, Weatherford, and senior
Andrew Lowrie all had two steals on the afternoon.
Raheem Regis was a perfect 9-for-9 off the bench and led the Wildcats with 18 points while Torrian Lee had 17 points and Steve Evans had 16 and 10 rebounds.
Rhodes moves to 3-2 on the season and prepare for their Southern Athletic Association opener on Wednesday in Memphis as they welcomein the Hendrix College Warriors for an 8 PM tipoff.
