MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College women's soccer team scored three goals in the second half to blow open the match against rival Sewanee en rout to a 4-0 victory at the Rhodes Soccer Field on Saturday afternoon.
The game, originally scheduled for Friday but was postponed due to heavy thunderstorms, was completely dominated by Rhodes as they move to 7-2-1 overall and 4-0-1 in SAA play. The Tigers were previously unbeaten in SAA play and suffered their first loss of the season in conference.
Rhodes out shot the Tigers 18-10 including a 15-6 advantage in the second half. The Lynx also held a 10-5 advantage in shots on target as well as a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks for the afternoon.
After a back and forth start to the first half, Rhodes would strike first in the 15th minute. Senior
Nicolette Glidden would send a corner kick into the box that found the head of junior
Emma Selner and onto the head of sophomore
Sydnie Schindler, who was able to head it past the keeper for an early one goal lead.
Neither team could get much going throughout the rest of the first half as the defenses stifled any sort of attack from either side. However, Rhodes flipped the script in the second half as they blew the game wide open in their favor.
It started in the second half as a terrific run into the box from senior
Angie Hurlow led to a pass towards the middle where Schindler finished for her second goal of the game and her team-leading ninth goal of the season.
About 15 minutes later in the 72nd minute, Selner sent a terrific low cross across the box and onto the foot of sophomore
Aly Hoyt who made it a 3-0 game. Moments later, Hoyt struck again, this time with an assist to senior
Elise Grisoni as the rout was on at 4-0.
The Lynx continue an incredible trend throughout the conference season as junior
Anna Maldonado earned her fourth shutout of the conference season. In five SAA contests, the Lynx have out scored their opponents 25-1, with their 25 goals in conference leading the way, and their one goal allowed also being tops in the conference.
Even more impressive, Rhodes has only allowed four goals in 2016, currently in the Top 30 in the nation. All this coming without a key defender in
Christine Zachry.
The Lynx have gotten tremendous play from Maldonando as well as the defense including familiar faces in seniors
Sarah Wachter and
Kelsey Sweeney, as well as junior
Ellie Valega, and new faces such as freshmen
Carly Cone and
Taylor Ryan.
Pair that with an offense that seems to be clicking on all cylinders behind the likes of Schindler and Grisoni as well as key pieces such as Hurlow and sophomore
Rachel Giampapa. The Lynx have also gotten outstanding play from their midfield in Selner and sophomore
Brenna Katz as well as great bench play in junior
Hope Elliott.
The Lynx prepare for a huge matchup on Sunday against #21 Centre where the winner earns a leg up towards the SAA Championship as well as hosting the tournament in a few weeks. The game is scheduled for a 2 PM start time with Senior Day taking place beforehand.
Rhodes will honor five seniors in Wachter, Sweeney, Grisoni, Glidden, and Hurlow.
