Women's Soccer Defeats Southwestern; Earns Second Straight Shutout

MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College women's soccer team picked up their second straight win on Sunday morning, defeating the Southwester University Pirates, 3-0.

For the second straight game, senior Hannah Selner led off the scoring in the third minute, creating offense in the box and finding the back of the net for her second goal of the season.

The Lynx continued its offensive aggression al throughout the first half, outshooting the Pirates, 14-4, and setting themselves up with numerous opportunities to extend the lead.

They would do just that in the 40th minutes as sophomore Hope Elliott took a pass from junior Sarah Watcher and extended the lead to 2-0 right before the break.

Rhodes would add a third goal in the 52nd minute from sophomore Emma Selner. The Lynx would cruise to the victory and earn their second straight shutout in the process.

Senior Chandler Kuhlman was credited with the win, picking up five saves in the contest. Emma and Hannah Selner combined for nine shots as both had three on target. Junior Nicolette Gidden took three shots with two on target on the morning.

Rhodes now improves to 2-1 on the season and wraps up a terrific opening weekend on their home field. The Lynx defense of sophomore Sarah Rostamo, junior Kelsey Sweeney, freshman Christine Zachry, and Watcher, along with other defensive substitutions and the goalkeeping of Kuhlman, were outstanding all weekend long.

The Lynx will return home on Wednesday, as they welcome in the Belhaven University Blazers to Memphis. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
