MEMPHIS - The Rhodes Lynx women's soccer team opened their home season at the Rhodes Soccer Field with a 2-0 win over the University of Ozarks, their first win and first shutout of the year.
The Lynx were dominant from start to finish, outshooting the Eagles, 34-5 with 16 shots on target. Rhodes also held a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Three minutes into the match, the Lynx struck for their first goal of 2015 as junior
Angie Hurlow sent a beautiful ball into the box, finding senior
Hannah Selner who put it away with the header and gave Rhodes the early 1-0 advantage.
Rhodes spent most of the first half in the Ozarks half of the field, but could not find a second goal, taking the 1-0 advantage into the break.
The Lynx continued to dominate throughout the second half and they were finally able to earn the second goal of the half as
Rachel Coyle scored in the 87th minutes off the assist from
Sydnie Schindler.
Schindler led the offensive attack with seven shots on the afternoon including four on target.
Hannah Selner and her sister, sophomore
Emma Selner each had five shots with three on target from Hannah.
Ellie Valega added three shots including two on target.
Senior
Chandler Kuhlman earned her first shutout of the season in victory. She came up with three saves on the afternoon including some key saves in the second half.
The Lynx now move to 1-1 on the season with the victory and will look to keep their opening home weekend perfect as they take on Southwestern University tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. The Pirates played earlier in the day and dropped a heartbreaker to Fontbonne, 2-1, in double overtime.
