Lynx Roll Warriors to Earn Opening Night Win

CONWAY, Ark. - The Rhodes College field hockey team started the 2015 season off with a bang, scoring eight goals in the first half to roll to a 13-0 win over the Hendrix Warriors on Tuesday evening at Warrior Turf Field.

The Lynx move to 1-0 on the new season and earned their first conference win in the process, going to 1-0 in Southern Athletic Association play.

Junior Christina DiFelice opened the scoring with back-to-back goals in the first 13 minutes of play for the early 2-0 lead. Senior Mary Rose Hazel would make it 2-0 three minutes later followed by a pair of goals from sophomore Georgie Wilkins.

After a goal from senior Evy Royther made it 6-0, DiFelice and Wilkins each added a goal a piece to close the half and give the Lynx an 8-0 lead at the break.

Royther and junior Mackenzie Busby would add goals in the second half while freshman Lizzie Wood added three goals, all in the second half, in her collegiate debut.

DiFelice, Wilkins, and Wood all had hat tricks on the evening while Royther added a pair of goals. Senior Julie Hertzman added two assists in the contest while DiFelice added an assist to her big game. Hazel, seniors Jordan Kugler and Katie Johnson, junior Grace Whelan, and sophomore Maddie Smith all added an assist in the contest.

Rhodes was aggressive all game long, outshooting the Warriors 54-1 in the game and earning a 17-1 advantage in corners. Sophomore goalkeeper Laura Eckelkamp had a quiet day, coming up with one save in the game.

The Lynx will now prepare for their home opener this weekend as they host the St. Jude Classic at Mason Field on the campus of Rhodes College. The Lynx will take on on eight-ranked Catholic University of America on Saturday at 11 a.m. and will be back in action on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. as they take on Wooster. Live Video and Live Stats will be provided throughout the weekend via Stretch Internet.
