MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Rhodes men's lacrosse team picked up a rainy win on Monday to start spring break over Transylvania University, 9-6.
The Lynx improve to 5-2 on the year while the Pioneers fall to 1-2 on the young season.
Rhodes netted the first goal at the 13:58 mark when
Cooper Robinson found the back of the cage for the early 1-0 lead. Just a minute later, Clark Watts scored a Pioneer goal to make the count 1-1. The Lynx went on to score three straight goals, from the stick of
Jason Lee,
Andrew Salamunovich and
Ryan Fennelly to post the 4-1 lead. Transy tacked on two goals in the final few minutes of the quarter to make the contest 4-3 at the first break.
In the second quarter the Lynx went to work, with
Evan Fitzpatrick, Lee and
Owen Koorbusch each finding the back of the cage to push the Rhodes lead to 7-3 and hold the Pioneers scoreless.
Transy opened the second half with a Clay Douthat goal to pull to 7-4. The Lynx netted an answer in the form of a second Fennelly goal, off an assist from Lee. The Pioneers scored a goal with one minute in the quarter, to make the count 8-5.
In the final period of play, Clark Watts aimed to rally the Pioneers, scoring the sixth Transy goal. Lee would net his third goal of the contest for the hat trick just over a minute later to secure the 9-6 win.
Rhodes outshot their counterparts 32-30, and snagged more ground balls by a count of 20-14.
Thomas Matthews got the start and all 60 minutes of play for the Lynx, grabbing 15 saves while in goal.
Rhodes will be back in action on March 11 when they host Beloit College.
