RICHARDSON, Texas – The Rhodes women's basketball team fell in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament to the No. 24 University of Texas at Dallas on Saturday, 63-38.
The Lynx finish the year with a 20-9 record, while the Comets advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a 25-4 mark on the season.
With back-to-back buckets from
Symone Daniels, the Lynx established an early 4-2 lead by the 18:14 mark. The advantage was short lived, when on the next possession, UT Dallas knotted the contest at 4-4, which proved to be the start of a run that would give the Comets the lead.
The Lynx aimed to diminish the deficit, and with a
Sarah Johnson three with 11:48 to play, they came close at 8-7. At the 5:54 mark another three, this time from
Blaire Smith edged the Lynx a bit closer at 14-10. Down the stretch, the Lynx struggled to put points on the board outside of the charity stripe. A 7-0 run to close the half for the Comets put the Lynx behind 24-14 at the break.
At the half, Johnson led the Lynx with seven points, with Daniels adding four points. For the Comets, Ashley Shaw netted seven first-half points, with Micaela Gonzalez chipping in six. Rhodes forced 17 Comet turnovers in the first half.
In the second half of action, the Lynx came out strong, with Daniels netting the Lynx first four buckets of the half, including a pair of trey's to cut the Comet lead to 29-24 with 14:46 to play. UT Dallas powered a 10-0 run to post a 42-29 advantage by the 10:21 mark.
The Lynx struggled to get their offense going, scoring only 24 points in the second half. They eventually fell to the Comets by a count of 63-38
Daniels finished with 17 points to lead the Lynx, with Johnson netting 14 in the outing. Rhodes shot 23.5 percent from the field, and 10-13 from the free throw line.
For the Comets, Madi Hess led the way with 19 points, while Amber Brown netted 13 points. The Lynx forced 23 turnovers in the contest, with ten steals on the night.
