MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Rhodes men's basketball team was upended by Hendrix College in the Southern Athletic Association Conference title game on Sunday, 73-70.
The Lynx fall to 20-7 on the season while the Warriors post a 12-16 mark.
In the two team's 46th meeting, the battle lived up to the hype of a championship. A pair of three's from each team opened the half, with
Brennan Sullivan coming up big with an answer. The Lynx trailed until the 12:28 mark when a pair of
Ryan Van Hoeck free throws gave the Lynx their first lead at 11-10.
Neither team could establish much of a cushion, with back-and-forth action. The Lynx were finally able to wedge out to a four-point lead after a
Geoff Livsey layup and a
Drew Miller three with 6:44 to play at 20-16. Rhodes fought to fend off the Warriors, but they charged back to knot the contest at 24-24 after a Gearen Littlefield lay-in with 3:10 to play.
Rhodes worked to regain the lead, and down the stretch a layup from
Aquil Muhammad to close the half gave the Lynx a slim three-point advantage heading into the break at 31-28.
At the midway mark, Miller led the Lynx with 10 points, while Sullivan chipped in eight. On the Warriors side, Hank Aldous netted 15 points, with Luke Vance adding six.
The close action ensued in the second half, as back-to-back Hendrix buckets to open play erased the Lynx lead and gave the Warriors the edge. After several lead changes and a couple ties, Rhodes was able to pick up a one-point lead at the 5:20 mark after a
Matt Wagner free throw gave Rhodes a 56-55 edge.
Down the stretch, the Warriors seemed to have the advantage, and a Rhodes lead quickly disappeared and turned into a Hendrix 68-65 lead after a Hank Aldous lay-in with 50 seconds to play. Rhodes fought to make it a contest, after a Miller weave through the lane, but the effort fell short as Hendrix held on for the 73-70 win.
Rhodes was led by Miller, who netted 18, while Sullivan and Livsey each added 16 points apiece. Van Hoeck and Collins each finished with six.
For the Warriors, Aldous totaled 32 points and Luke Vance netted 23, and grabbed nine rebounds.
Two Lynx were named to the 2014-2015 Southern Athletic Association All-Tournament team, in
Drew Miller and
Geoff Livsey.
