JACKSON, Miss. – The Rhodes women's basketball team picked up an exciting win in the semi-final round of the Southern Athletic Association Conference Tournament over the No. 2 seed Berry College on Saturday, 65-62.
The Lynx survive and advance with a 19-8 record while the Vikings finish up the 2014-2015 campaign with an 18-9 mark.
The semi-final round of the SAA Conference Tournament promised to be a close contest as the Lynx battled with the Vikings for the third time, splitting the series 1-1 in the regular season. With several lead changes and ties, the fast paced match up was heated.
To open play,
Dy'Nelle Todman knocked down a trey, only to have it matched by Berry's Chanlir Segarra. Rhodes was able to stretch out to a four-point lead by the 10:41 mark after
Hannah Orth knocked down another triple to make the count 16-12. Just two minutes later the Vikings knotted the contest at 19-19, but the Lynx charged back to take the lead.
Again, with help from the three-point line, the Lynx posted a four-point lead after
Symone Daniels knocked down a trey with 4:42 to play in the half. Down the stretch head coach
Matt Dean's team worked to maintain its distance, and after a pair of free throws from
Sarah Johnson the Lynx took a 33-29 lead into the break.
At the half, the Lynx were led by Johnson who netted nine points, followed by Todman who chipped in eight. Daniels and Orth each recorded nine points at the midway mark. For Berry, Segarra tallied 15 points, with Emma Cook adding nine.
The second half of action provided as much drama as the first, with the Lynx fighting to hold on to their slim margin. By the 11:58 mark the Lynx enjoyed their largest lead of eight after a
Blaire Smith deep ball made the count 55-47.
Rhodes continued to push ahead, and with 5:45 to play, a Daniels weave through the lane gave Rhodes a 63-54 edge, their largest lead to that point. The Lynx were able to hold on down to the wire, and with the help of sound free throw shooting, wrapped up a 65-62 win.
Rhodes was led by Daniels who netted 18 points and picked up five rebounds. Johnson added 17 points with five assists and one steal. Todman also recoded double digit marks with 14 points.
For the Vikings, Segarra led all scorers with 27 points, and seven assists. Cook added 17 points and six rebounds in the outing.
