Rhodes captures SAA Regular Season Championship with 58-41 win over Millsaps

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Rhodes men's basketball team secured their share of a Southern Athletic Association Regular season title on Sunday, defeating Millsaps College 58-41.

The Lynx finish out the regular season with an 18-6 season record and a 11-3 league mark, while the Majors fall to 7-18 on the year and 3-11 in conference play.

Head Coach Mike DeGeorge's squad was in complete control of the contest and never trailed throughout. The hot shooting Lynx opened things up with a handful of three's including a trey from Brennan Sullivan, Luke Collins, and Keyshawn Butts to post a 11-4 lead by the 14:10 mark.

The Majors worked to make a ball-game out of it, charging to within two-points with 5:53 to play after a Ryan Detillieu three made the score 17-15. But the Lynx didn't hang around for long, pushing out to an eight-point advantage at 23-15 with four minutes to play. A big Ryan Van Hoeck three to close the half gave Rhodes a 28-20 lead heading into the break.

At the midway point, the balanced offensive attack saw four Lynx with five points, in Collins, Van Hoeck, Goeff Livsey and Butts. Livsey added six rebounds to his totals, with Collins dishing out two assists. On the Majors side, Detillieu led the way with eight, with Myles Moore adding six points for Millsaps.

To start the second half, Rhodes caught fire from three-point range and buried the Majors with four deep balls, with two from Collins and a pair from Livsey and Sullivan to post a 42-26 lead with 15:25 to play. The Lynx continued to apply the pressure, and by the 7:12 mark a JJ Weir three and a Matt Wagner lay-in gave Rhodes a 49-36 lead.

Down the stretch, the Lynx continued to control the contest, and a pair of Van Hoeck layups put the finishing touches on the 58-71 Lynx win.

Collins finished leading all scorers with 14 points, to go with three assists. Van Hoeck added 11 points and two rebounds in the outing, while Livsey and Sullivan each netted eight win. Drew Miller and Butts each chipped in five towards the Lynx totals, with Miller grabbing 13 rebounds and dishing five assists in the contest.

For Millsaps, Detillieu led the way with 14 points. Moore added nine and six rebounds. The Lynx held their counterparts to 34.0 percent shooting from the field and a mere 22.2 percent shooting from the floor.

Rhodes will look forward to the Southern Athletic Association Conference Tournament, where they will serve as hosts after securing the No. 1 seed. The opening round of contests will kick off at 1 p.m. on Feb. 27, with the Championship game slated for March 1.
