Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Hoops Pushes Nationally-Ranked Maryville; Drops Close Contest

MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College women's basketball team pushed the 11th/13th-ranked Maryville College Scots to the limit on Saturday evening as the two teams found themselves trading leads in the second half. However, the Scots were able to close the game out and earn the win at Mallory Gymnasium, 48-43.

Neither team was able to shoot well with the Lynx shooting 15-for-53 (28%) from the field and 6-for-23 (26%) from behind the arch. The Scots struggled as well thanks to a terrific Rhodes defensive effort, shooting 18-for-56 (32%) from the field and 4-for-17 (24%) from three.

Maryville started the game on fire, jumping out to a 9-0 lead a little over two minutes into the contest. Rhodes would use the remainder of the quarter to outscore the Scots, 11-3, and trail by only one at the end of the quarter.

Both teams could not get anything rolling in the second quarter as Rhodes outscored Maryville, 7-6, to tie the game at 18 a piece going into the break.

It would be a different story in the third quarter as the offenses began to click. Rhodes would take their first lead of the game at the 7:52 mark as senior Hannah Orth drained a three from the wing for a 21-20 lead.

The two teams would exchange buckets before a 10-0 run by the Scots gave them a 32-23 lead and what looked liked all the momentum for one of the national powers in Division III Women's Basketball.

However, the Lynx moved within four to keep it close before a late bucket gave Maryville a 37-31 lead at the end of three.

Back-to-back buckets to start the fourth from senior Catherine Eckert and Orth made it a one point game. Maryville would inch their lead a little further, but the Lynx would remain in striking distance, getting it back down to a one possession game on numerous occasions.

On this night, Maryville would be a little too much as they would hold off the Lynx rally and escape Mallory with the victory.

Eckert finished with 19 points and eight boards as well as a block. Senior Symone Daniels added seven points, eight rebounds, three blocks, and a pair of steals. Sophomore Jessie Ustick was terrific off the bench with two steals as well while sophomore Lauren Travis added four assists. The Lynx were outrebounded, 48-43, including 14 offensive boards for Maryville.

Rachel Hawn lead the Scots off the bench with 12 points while Mackenzie Puckett added 10 points.

Rhodes moves to 2-3 on the season and will return to action tomorrow at 6 p.m. at Mallory against the Rust College Bearcats.
