Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Drops Opener to 25th-Ranked ETBU

MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College men's basketball team struggled from the field on Saturday afternoon, shooting only 31% from the field, but were able to force 20 turnovers to give the Lynx a chance to knock off 25th-ranked East Texas Baptist. However, a 6-0 run towards the end of the game would be enough for the Tigers to escape Memphis with a 58-55 victory.

Rhodes falls to 0-1 on the season while the Tigers go to 1-0 on the young year.

East Texas Baptist jumped out to a 6-0 lead, but Rhodes would get the year's first buckets from juniors Aquil Muhammad, JJ Weir, and Andrew Lowrie to make it an 8-6 game in favor of ETBU. The Tigers would then push their lead out to 16-8 as they were able to keep the Rhodes offense limited throughout the first eight minutes.

The Lynx would respond with an 8-1 run throughout the next three minutes as Lowrie hit a three and Muhammad was able to go to work in the paint. ETBU pushed the lead back to 20-16, but Rhodes went on a 6-0 run to tie the game at 22. The two teams would exchange buckets as the Tigers would take a 29-28 lead going into the break.

The second half would be a great battle between as the half saw four lead exchanges and three ties. At the 7:29 mark, ETBU looked as though they were in control as a layup gave them a 48-41 lead. However, Rhodes responded with a three from junior Brennan Sullivan, a pair of free throws from Muhammad, and a basket from sophomore Keyshawn Butts to tie the game back at 48.

The game would move to 50-50 with 3:22 remaining; however, the Tigers would go on a 6-0 run to go ahead 56-50 with 24 seconds remaining. Despite a great effort to rally by the Lynx, they would come away just short, falling 58-55.

The Lynx were 19-for-62 from the field and 4-of-18 (22%) from behind the arch. Rhodes was excellent at three free-throw line, shooting 13-for-14 (93%). Rhodes was out rebounded, 38-36, but forced 20 turnovers while giving it away 15 times. ETBU was 21-for-51 (41%) from the field, 4-for-16 (25%) from three, and 12-for-18 (67%) from the free throw line.

Muhammad finished with 16 points and eight boards, shooting 6-of-12 from the field. Junior Tyler Gee notched a double-double, going for 11 points and 12 rebounds while Lowrie added nine points off the bench. Butts led the way defensively with three steals on the day.

Rhodes will return to Mallory Gymnasium on Friday at 7 p.m. as they welcome in Johnson University (TN).
