Football Can't Overcome Big First Quarter in Loss to Chicago

MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College football team saw their 13 game home winning streak snapped on Saturday afternoon as a 21-point first quarter was too much to overcome, falling to the Chicago Maroons, 21-7, in Southern Athletic Association action.

Rhodes falls to 3-3 in 2015 and 1-3 in SAA play. It is the Lynx first loss at home since falling to Millsaps on October 20th, 2012. Meanwhile, Chicago improves to 5-1 overall and 4-1 in SAA play.

The Maroons started things with a 12-play, 75-yard drive including two third down conversions and a fourth down conversion from the two yard line to move ahead 7-0 early in the contest.

Following a Rhodes three-and-out, Chicago struck again, this time using a 52-yard touchdown pass to move ahead 14-0.

Rhodes would have another three-and-out on the offensive end and the Maroons would strike again, moving 80-yards in nine plays to take a 21-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Chicago finished with over 200 yards of total offense in the first quarter alone.

In the second quarter, Rhodes began to muster some offense behind the legs of freshman PJ Settles and playmaking ability of senior Jonathan Wiener. The Lynx would find themselves deep into Chicago territory on three separate occasions in the second quarter; however, the Lynx would come away with no points thanks to a missed field goal and a pair of turnovers on downs.

The good news for Rhodes is the defense began to rise to the occasion, shutting down Chicago's potent attack and putting immense pressure on quarterback Burke Moser.

Neither team could do much throughout the third quarter as both would punt to each other. With 5:43 remaining in the quarter, the Lynx began a long drive, including three fourth-down conversion in a 18-play, 59-yard drive, that moved into the fourth quarter. Sophomore Gage Battles would power into the endzone to put the Lynx on the scoreboard and give Rhodes tons of momentum.

The Maroons moved the ball into Rhodes territory as they looked to answer, but senior Michael Shield made a huge play, stripping the ball of the wide receivers after a pass completion and recovering his own fumble to give the Lynx great field position.

Rhodes would move it into Chicago territory and essentially move inside the 30, looking to make it a one score with a touchdown. However, Battles, who had a terrific day on the ground, would be stopped on fourth and short at the 25 to turn the ball over on downs.

Chicago would take over five minutes off the clock from there and would win the third edition of the Blues Bowl, picking up their first win ever in Memphis.

Despite giving up close to 225 yards of total offense in the first half, the Lynx defense would hold Chicago under 100 yards for the remainder of the game as the Maroons finished with 318 yards of total offense. Shield, junior Matt Ellis, and sophomore Elliott Tostrud all finished with eight tackles on the afternoon with junior John Dodd adding six tackles. Senior Wyatt McRae had 1.5 sacks, freshman Duke Sherrell had one sack, and freshman Sam McLain had 0.5 sacks.

Offensively, the Lynx finished 258 total yards on the day. Battles would have a a career day, going for 119 yards on 33 carries for a touchdown. Settles would add 58 yards on nine carries. Junior Sam Yarborough finished 18-for-34 for 106 yards while Wiener caught nine balls for 62 yards.

Rhodes will return home next weekend for Homecoming. They will welcome in the Birmingham-Southern Panthers for a 2 p.m. kickoff. The Lynx will honor the 2015 Hall of Fame class as well as name Mr. and Mrs. Rhodes.
