MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A sharp shooting
Drew Miller helped lead the Rhodes men's basketball team past Sewanee on Sunday, 55-44 to remain unbeaten in Southern Athletic Association play.
The Lynx improve to 13-3 on the season and remain unbeaten in league play with a 6-0 mark. The Tigers fall to 10-7 on the year and 4-2 in conference play.
The matchup proved to be a close physical battle with the Tigers pulling out to the early 4-0 lead by the 17:43 mark. The Lynx chipped away at the deficit and turned it into a 10-point Rhodes lead with an old-fashioned three point play from
Brennan Sullivan and
Keyshawn Butts coupled with a pair of trey's from
Drew Miller and
Geoff Livsey, by the 12:10 mark.
The first half was a low scoring affair, as only eight more shots would fall in the half from the floor. Sewanee was behind most of those shots, as they worked to whittled down the Lynx lead to just two points by the break, with a score of 23-21 at the half.
At the midway point Livsey led the Lynx in scoring with eight points. Sullivan netted five points, with Miller adding four. For the Tigers, Marcellus Caldwell scored five, with Seth Brown, Jorden Williams and Jacob McCullough each adding four to Sewanee's totals. The Lynx shot 30.4 percent from the field in the first half, with 22.2 percent shooting from beyond the arc. The Tigers posted 41.7 percent shooting from the floor and went 0-3 from three point range.
Rhodes briefly saw their lead vanish at the start of the second half, as Sewanee came out of the break to score the first six points. The Lynx wouldn't go quietly and a big Sullivan three from the corner brought the Lynx within on at 27-26 with 17:35 to play in the game.
The Sullivan three was just the start of a 15-0 run for the Lynx, where
Luke Collins and Miller each hit a three of their own to pull out to a 35-27 lead by the 14:51 mark. A six point swing, fueled by buckets from Butts, Miller and
Ryan Van Hoeck pushed the Lynx out to a 44-31 lead by the 10 minute mark.
Rhodes didn't let off the gas, and with a timely Miller three posted a lead of 51-34 with 4:16 to play. The Lynx held on down the stretch and pulled out the 55-44 win to remain unbeaten in league play.
Miller led all scorers with his 16 points, where he shot 5-10 from the field and 3-5 from beyond at the arc. Livsey chipped in 12 points and six rebounds in the outing, with Sullivan netting eight points and five rebounds. Van Hoeck added seven points and seven rebounds.
The Lynx held all of Sewanees squad under double digits, with Williams netting the high score of eight. Caldwell finished with seven and Keshonn Carter added six. Rhodes held the Tigers to 37.0 percent shooting from the field and just 23.1 percent shooting from beyond the arc.
Rhodes shot 38.3 percent in the contest and 31.6 percent from deep. Sewanee out-rebounded the Lynx by a narrow margin of 32-29, and had more points in the paint with a tally of 22-20. The Lynx forced 18 Tiger turnovers, and capitalized with 17 points off turnovers.
Rhodes will be back in action on Jan. 30 when they travel to Birmingham Southern College.
