ROME, Ga. – In the semi-final round of the Southern Athletic Association Conference tournament, the Rhodes baseball team defeated Berry College, 7-5, forcing a decision game.
The Lynx improve to 31-13 while the Vikings now have an overall record of 29-14.
Rhodes struck right off the bat, when
Will Gietema singled to send home
Bill Munson and give the Lynx the 1-0 advantage. Berry had an answer in the bottom of the inning and knotted the game up at 1-1.
Rhodes added two more runs in the third inning with Gietema proving catalyst for the Lynx again as he singled home
Ryan Olive. On the next at bat,
Strother White hit a sacrifice to score
Patrick Kilkenny and give the Lynx a 3-1 edge.
The Lynx offense continued to produce, adding a single run in the fourth when Muson hit a double down the left field line, sending
David Balaguer home and notched a 4-1 lead. Berry edged a little closer, adding a run in the fifth inning.
The sixth inning Rhodes added another run, with Balaguer executing a squeeze play to score
Walker McWherter and get a 5-2 lead. Berry added another run in the bottom of the inning, pulling to 5-3.
A two run seventh inning gave the Lynx some cushion when Gietema earned his third RBI, scoring Olive for the second time. McWherter notched a single to score Kilkenny and give Rhodes the 7-3 lead. The Vikings charged in the bottom of the inning, adding two more runs before the Lynx got out of the inning in a loaded bases situation.
Daniel Morris got the start for the Lynx, throwing 6.1 innings and striking out three batters.
Max Halasz came in for 1.2 innings where he only allowed one hit.
Blake Glauben closed the final inning, striking out one for the Lynx.
The win forces a elimination game that will take place at 2 p.m. on April 27.
