Rhodes puts up a fight in season finale loss to Centre, 64-61

Box Score DANVILLE, Ky. – Rhodes men's basketball fell in a heart breaker to Centre College in the Southern Athletic Association Conference Tournament, 64-61 on Saturday in the Semi-Final round of action.
 
The Lynx finish their season at 15-12 while the Colonels advance to the SAA tournament finals with a 22-4n overall record.
 
Centre began the contest with back-to-back buckets from Blake Scinta and Collin Lopez to take the early 4-0 lead. The Colonels lead quickly swelled to 10 by the 10:06 mark after a Tyler Wesley lay-in made the count 17-7. The Lynx offense got going, and Rhodes cut the deficit to five after a Ryan Van Hoeck jumper and a Michael Gallagher three made it 17-12 with 8:15 to play.
 
Centre continued to keep its distance, but the persistent Lynx were nipping at their heels. Rhodes went to work in the paint, getting layups from Johnny Dunavant and Tate Sledge to pull within seven at 23-16 with 5:21 left in the half. Rhodes ended the half with a pair of Shane Watson free throws and a Drew Miller buck to make the halftime tally, 31-20.
 
At the half, the Lynx shot 30.4 percent from the field, while Centre shot 47.4 percent. Rhodes was led by Luke Collins with four, with Miller and Gallagher adding three each. The Colonels' Wesley and Josh Karsner each netted seven first-half points.
 
Geoff Livsey opened the second half with a big three to pull within eight in the opening 45 seconds, showing some life left in the Lynx. Rhodes continued to work away at the Centre led, pulling within five at the 16:14 mark after a Livsey lay-in made it 37-32. Another big three from Gallagher at 10:57 brought the Lynx even closer at 43-41.
 
 Rhodes fought for their first lead at the 4:01 mark when Patrick McGrail nailed a huge three for head coach Mike DeGeorge and the Lynx. Centre seemed to have an answer for everything, as the Colonels regained the lead with a Lopez layup at 3:41 for the 54-53 lead. Rhodes again fought for a one point lead after a Van Hoeck and Miller layup combo, only to have it dashed away by a Scinta tip-in to make it 60-59.
 
The Lynx tied it up at 61-61 with a smooth Dunavant cut through the lane at 45 seconds left in regulation, but Donovan Whiteside had the ultimate answer, as he drilled a three with 23 seconds to play. The Lynx' last efforts to tie weren't enough, as Centre clinched a trip to the championships at 64-61.
 
The Lynx' balanced attack was led by Livsey, who netted 14 points, grabbed three rebounds and one steal. Miller added 10, with six rebounds, five assists and a steal. Van Hoeck finished with seven, while Dunavant and Gallagher each added six.
 
Centre was led by Scinta, who scored 15 points and pulled down four rebounds. Karsner chipped in 12 with Whiteside finishing with 10.
