Sewanee, Tenn. – Rhodes battled back from a nine point halftime deficit at Sewanee, but ran out of gas in overtime for the fifth time this season, falling 81-68.
The Lynx fall to 14-10 on the year and 7-6 in Southern Athletic Association contests, while Sewanee climbs back to .500 with a 12-12 record overall and 5-8 in SAA contests.
The Tigers hit a jump shot on their first possession of the game to take a 2-0 lead and put the Lynx in down early. A three by
Johnny Dunavant on the Lynx ensuing possession provided a 3-2 lead.
The teams proceeded to exchange baskets before back to back threes by Dunavant and
Brennan Sullivan gave Rhodes an 11-7 lead five minutes in to the game. The Lynx went scoreless for the next six minutes and Sewanee capitalized by going on an 11-0 run to make it 18-11 with nine minutes remaining in the half.
Dunavant hit his third three-pointer of the half to know the score at 18. Unfortunately for the Lynx, this would be the closest they would come to having a lead for the rest of the half. Sewanee closed the half on a 15-6 run to secure a 33-24 lead at the break.
Keshonn Carter, Matt Tome and Leo Born each had eight points in the first half for the Tigers, while the Lynx were led by Dunavant with nine points and
Geoff Livsey with six.
The bad news for Rhodes was that the second half was like much of the first. The Lynx were forced to play from behind and try to fight their way back in to the contest. A Livsey three-pointer with 16:31 remaining in the game cut the Tigers lead to five at 36-31. Sewanee then used a 9-2 run over the next four minutes to stretch the lead back to double-digits, 45-33, with 12:32 left in the second half.
The Lynx continued to battle, cutting the lead to as few as four on four different occasions over the next nine minutes of action. With 3:21 remaining in the game, Livsey drove to the basket for a layup and was fouled. He made the free throw to complete the three-point play and bring Rhodes within one 57-56.
A series of turnovers and missed shots by both squads ensued before a three pointer by
Patrick McGrail with 1:28 remaining gave the Lynx their first lead of the half, 59-57. Jorden Williams then scored on consecutive possessions for Sewanee to retake the lead at 62-59 with :17 seconds left.
Dunavant connected on his fourth three of the game with three left to knot the score at 62. Livsey stole the Tigers inbounds pass and called timeout. Coach DeGeorge drew up a play for the Lynx hottest shooter, but Dunavant's heave went begging as it bounced off the front of the rim as time expired.
It seemed the Lynx had all the momentum heading in to overtime, but the Tigers quickly took control. After Carter and
Drew Miller exchanged baskets on the first two possessions to keep it tied at 64, Sewanee used a 17-5 run to shut the door on Rhodes' bid for a come from behind victory.
The Lynx were led in scoring by
Johnny Dunavant, who went 4-6 from deep, and
Geoff Livsey, who each scored 14 points.
Shane Watson chipped in 12 points off the bench and
Brennan Sullivan added eight points on a perfect 3-3 from the field. Livsey pulled down five offensive rebounds and
Drew Miller added four.
The Tigers had four players who scored double figures, led by Jorden Williams' 22 points and Carter's 18. Marcellus Caldwell had 14 on 5-5 shooting and 4-4 from the free throw line, and Matt Tome chipped in 12, including 3-3 from deep. Carter also grabbed 13 rebounds for Sewanee, which had a 38-22 rebounding advantage.
Rhodes heads to Danville, Ky. for their final regular season contest, facing off against the Centre College Colonels on Sunday. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
