Rhodes opens road trip with 58-46 victory over Berry College

ROME, Ga. – Rhodes women's basketball posted a strong road win over Berry College, 58-46 on Friday night in Southern Athletic Association action.
 
The Lynx advance to 18-3 on the season and post a 10-1 record in the SAA. The Vikings fall to 11-11 for the season and 4-7 in league play.
 
Rhodes College opened the contest with back-to-back three from Lauren Avant and Natalie Goodrum to establish an early 6-0 lead in the opening 42 seconds of play. The Vikings had an answer, as they went on a seven point run behind a Chanlir Segarra three to grab a 15-8 lead at the 13:04. The Lynx charged back to reestablish their lead, and an Avant layup with 11:15 left to play in the half gave Rhodes a 17-15 lead.
 
A pair of Symone Daniels buckets at the 6:50 mark gave the Lynx a 21-17 advantage. Rhodes extended its lead to seven at the 3:21 mark with a pair of Avant buckets, to make the count 26-19. The Lynx closed out the first half of play with a Daniels layup to take a 28-24 lead into the halftime break.
 
Rhodes was led at the half by Avant who posted 15 points, four rebounds two steals and two assists in the first half of action. Daniels added eight points and six rebounds in the first half. The Vikings were led by Segarra who netted nine, and Megan Walsh who tacked on six.
 
The Lynx put up 32.4 percent shooting in the first half, while knocking down three, three pointers. Rhodes opponents shot 40.0 percent from the field, with 25.0 percent shooting from beyond the three point arc.
 
Coach Matt Dean's squad came out of the halftime fired up, and got to work on the offensive end. Dy'Nelle Todman opened the scoring in the second half with a lay-in 14 seconds into the half, giving the Lynx a 30-24 lead. A pair of Daniels buckets at the 12:46 mark gave the Lynx a 40-29 lead as Rhodes continued to pad its lead. Rhodes' defense continued to harass the Vikings, turning turnovers into points while building on its lead.
 
Another Goodrum three, followed by a pair of Avant Free throws gave the Lynx their largest lead of 15 at the 4:27 mark, with a score of 54-39. Rhodes finished the contest strong with a Daniels layup to make the final score 58-46.
 
Avant led all scorers with her 26 points, finishing with six rebounds, six assists three steals and two blocked shots. Daniels also worked her way into double digit scoring with 20 points and posted a double-double with her 14 rebounds. The sophomore also grabbed five steals in the outing. Todman and Goodrum each posted six points apiece towards the Lynx total.
 
Berry was led by Segarra, who netted 11 points and pulled down six rebounds. Mel McLean and Emma Cook each finished with eight for the Vikings.
 
Rhodes forced 15 Viking turnovers, which the capitalized into 19 points. The Lynx shot 34.4 percent from the field in the contest, while holding Berry to 34.0 percent shooting.
 
The Lynx will wrap up their trip to Georgia on Sunday, Feb. 16 as they face off against Oglethorpe University. Rhodes will tip off against the Stormy Petrels at 12 p.m.
