MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Rhodes men's basketball team, led by a team effort, easily bypassed Austin College on Saturday, 90-61.
The Lynx pick up the bounce back win, and improve to 4-2 on the year, while the Roo's fall to 2-3 on the season.
Rhodes got off to a strong start, quickly pulling out to a seven point lead by the 17:28 mark after a
Luke Collins three and pair of buckets from
Ryan Van Hoeck and
Tate Sledge made the count 8-1. The Lynx staved off any Roo's charges, maintaining a steadily growing distance.
By the 10:53 mark, the Rhodes lead had swelled to double digits after another Collins trey ball made the score 24-14. The Lynx continued to pour it on from deep as a
Brennan Sullivan three with 5:53 to play made the Lynx lead 36-16.
A 12-1 run closed out the Rhodes first half, powered by a scoring spree from
Tyler Gee, with the sophomore scoring the Lynx final eight points. The Lynx defense was stifling, as coach
Mike DeGeorge's squad held Austin under 20 points for the duration of the half, with the count at the break, 48-19.
The scoring was evenly spread, as Gee's eight led the Lynx at the half. Sledge and Sullivan added seven points at the break with
Matt Wagner and
Drew Miller each finishing with six. The Roo's were led by Alan Sullivan who netted eight points.
Rhodes shot an impressive 68.0 percent from the field in the opening half of play, with 50.0 percent from beyond the arc. The Lynx held Austin to just 25.0 percent shooting, and 27.3 percent from three point land. Rhodes forced 11 first half turnovers out of the Roo's, and picked up six team steals.
Austin opened the half with a quick seven point run behind two Brian Baehl lay-ups and a Austin Freet three pointer, to make the score 48-26 at the 18:11 mark. Rhodes wasn't prepared to let their lead slip that easy, as they worked to maintain their lead. Miller sparked the Lynx with a long-three and a lay-in to bring the count to 56-31 in favor of the Lynx by the 14:48 mark.
A
Dylan Bliss three with 3:22 to play gave the Lynx a 80-51 advantage, and an
Ian Harrison lay-in just a minute later gave the Lynx their largest lead, a 31 point lead, to make the count 84-53. The young class closed out the contest for the Lynx, and Rhodes secured the 90-61 win.
Gee ended the contest with the game-high 16 point, where he went 5-6 from the field and a perfect 6-6 from the charity stripe. The sophomore added six rebounds in the outing. Miller shipped in 11 points, with five rebounds and four assists, with Collins finishing with double digits at 10 points, and three assists.
Jeremy Swisher led the Roo's with his 13 points, with Freet adding 11 to the Roo's totals.
The Lynx held their opponents to just 38.8 percent shooting from the field and only allowed eight three pointers. Rhodes posted a hot 56.9 field goal percentage in the contest, with 44.4 percent from three point land. Rhodes forced 18 Austin turnovers, which they turned into 24 points.
Rhodes will look for the quick turn-around, as the Lynx will be back on the hard wood on Dec. 3 in their conference opening match-up. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. when the Hendrix College Warriors come to Memphis.
