MEMPHIS, Tenn. – With a record setting night from senior
Sarah Johnson, the No. 21 ranked Rhodes women's basketball team fell to the No. 13 ranked University of Texas at Tyler Patriots, 78-67.
The Lynx fall to 2-1 on the year, while the Patriots are now 2-0 on the season.
The battle lived up to the hype, as the game was a dog fight from the get go.
Sarah Johnson got things started, hitting a quick three to give the Lynx the initial 3-0 lead. The Patriots wouldn't stay quiet for long, as they charged to take five point lead by the 16:15 mark after a Michelle Obach trey paired with a Madison Wilson bucket. Johnson again buried the deep ball to put the Lynx within two at the 15:51 mark. 10-8.
Rhodes continued to chip away at the UT Tyler lead, and after a pair of
Symone Daniels baskets with 13:41 to play, the Lynx regained the advantage at 14-13. The back and forth action ensued, as both teams traded baskets and leads.
The UT Tyler offense got going with a 9-4 run, that brought the Lynx deficit to six at the 4:32 mark, 31-25. Coach
Matt Dean's squad showed no signs of quitting, as they mounted a 9-1 run to regain the lead after
Bailey Kramer converted on an old-fashioned three point play, taking the 36-34 advantage with 2:03 to play. The even battle ensued as Jasmin Baskin knotted the contest at 37-37 all heading into the halftime break.
At the half, the Lynx were led by Johnson, who led all scorers with 13 points. Kramer added 11 points to seven rebounds, as the sophomore shot 3-4 from the field and shot an impressive 100 percent from the charity stripe. Daniels added 10 first half points.
Obach led the Patriots efforts with ten points, with Teylor Seals adding nine points and Jasmin Baskin chipping in eight points.
The Lynx shot 40 percent from the field to open play, with two made threes. Rhodes pulled in 17 rebounds, including 11 defensive rebounds. The Patriots shot a hot 52 percent from the field, and a scorching 50 percent from beyond the three point arc. The Lynx held UT Tyler to only two offensive rebounds and 11 rebounds overall.
The Lynx opened the second half with Johnson going back to work, getting an and-one bucket to put Rhodes up 40-38 with 19:10 to play. Rhodes continued to battle, as the Patriots regained a brief lead until
Hannah Orth knocked down a three to regain the Lynx advantage with 13:15 to play, 47-46.
The Lynx and the Patriots continued to trade places as the leader, with the Patriots building on their lead with a 10-2 run, capped by an Obach three at the 7:45 mark to take a 60-53 lead. The lead continued to swell, getting to an 11 point advantage at the three minute mark.
Rhodes worked to chip away at the lead, with a
Dy'Nelle Todman bucket and three Johnson free-throws at the 1:35 mark to cut the lead to six, at 70-64. The Lynx comeback fell short, as the Lynx fell, 78-67.
Johnson ended the night with a career-high 26 points to easily lead all scorers. The senior also dished out five assists and pulled in four rebounds. Kramer notched a double-double with her 13 points and 11 rebounds. Daniels added 12 points and four rebounds to the Lynx totals.
UT Tyler was led by Baskin, who finished with 18 points, followed by 15 points from Obach and a 14 point, eight rebound night for Brittany King. The Lynx posted 36.8 percent shooting in the contest, while their counterparts put up 52.9 percent.
Rhodes will be back in action on Nov. 22 as they host Letourneau University, with tip off set for 3 p.m.
