Rhodes posts 67-54 win over Fontbonne

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Rhodes men's basketball team picked up their first win of the 2014-2015 season on Sunday against Fontbonne University, 67-54.

The Lynx improve to 1-1 on the year while the Griffins fall to 0-2 to begin their campaign.

Ryan Van Hoeck got things started for Rhodes, as he worked inside to get the opening bucket and the 2-0 lead at the 19:45 mark. The Griffins were able to keep up, as the Lynx traded baskets and leads with their opponents until grabbing the lead at the 12:14 mark when Luke Collins buried a deep three to take the 10-6 advantage.

The Lynx pieced together a 12-2 run, aided by their sharp shooters, with three made three-pointers from Brennan Sullivan, and a three from Drew Miller to take the 25-13 lead at the 7:12 mark. Rhodes continued to keep their distance, with another three, this time from Dylan Bliss at the 3:46 mark to push ahead 30-20.

The Bliss three sparked an 11-0 run for the Lynx, as they closed out the half with a pair of buckets from Miller and another Van Hoeck lay in to post a 38-20 advantage heading into the break.

In the opening period, the Lynx fired a hot 45.2 percent from the field, including a scorching 53.3 percent from beyond the three point line. Sullivan led the way at the half, with 12 points. Rhodes held their opponents to 34.8 percent shooting in the first half, and only 25 percent from the three point line.

Van Hoeck picked up in the second half right where he left off, working inside the paint for the bucket, and the 19 point lead for the Lynx with 18:06 to play at 39-20. Rhodes worked to widen the gap, as Miller converted on an old fashioned three-point play to give the Lynx a 46-23 edge with 14:35 to play.

At the 11:31 mark, first-year Keyshawn Butts got into the scoring column, jumping on the three point train, as he drained a deep ball from the outside the arc, boosting the Lynx led to 27, at 50-23. Rhodes held off several Fontbonne charges, keeping their distance. Despite a 13-2 run from the Griffins to close the half, the Lynx held on to their lead, and picked up the 67-54 victory.
