JACKSON, Miss. – The Rhodes football team posted a win in their regular season finale against Millsaps College on Saturday, 19-14.
Rhodes improves to 8-2 on the season and 5-1 in league play while the Majors fall to 3-6 on the year and 2-4 in the Southern Athletic Association.
The two squads traded possessions to open the contest, when the Lynx were finally able to put points on the board with 3:16 to play in the opening quarter. It was a 55-yard pass from junior,
Blake Box to
Nick Parinella for the touchdown, and the 7-0 lead after a successful
Tucker Nichols extra point.
The Lynx battled in the second quarter, with the Majors missing a 44-yard field goal attempt to open the period. The Lynx held Millsaps scoreless, aided by a
Michael Shield interception on the Majors second possession of the quarter, which he returned to the Rhodes 25-yard line. The Lynx couldn't turn the turnover into points, and took the 7-0 lead into the halftime break.
To open the second half, the Lynx kicked off to their opponents, and were able to force a punt from the Majors. The back-and-forth action continued, as Rhodes wasn't able to get anything going offensively till the end of the quarter. On a nine-play, 62-yard drive, the Lynx posted six points after a Box pass found
Roc Sherrell in the endzone at the 14:53 mark of the fourth quarter. The extra point was blocked, and the Lynx held onto a 13-0 advantage.
The Lynx continued to work the Majors, as
Matt Ellis intercepted Majors QB Zak Thrasher at the eight minute mark. Rhodes capitalized, posting another touchdown, this time a 22-yard rush from Sherrell. The Lynx' try for two was unsuccessful, and Rhodes posted a 19-0 lead.
The Majors refused to go without a fight, and on the succeeding kickoff, Rashad Sims returned the kickoff 93 yards for the first Majors points of the contest. A Beau Brady extra point at the 6:08 mark made the count 19-7 in favor of the Lynx.
The Lynx came up with another big stop on the ensuing drive when Ellis intercepted his second pass of the day at the 2:01 mark. To add to the drama, the Majors forced a punt, and on the play, blocked the Rhodes punter
Patrick Knight. Jeff Milner caught the ball out of the air and made the six point return. The extra point was good, as the Majors moved within five at 19-14. The Millsaps on-side kick attempt was recovered by Shield, and the Lynx held on for the 19-14 victory.
Box had a productive day for the Lynx, throwing for 150 yards, and two touchdowns. Parinella was Box's favorite target, with four catches for 93 yards and a touchdown. On the ground, Rhodes was led by
Kevin Vieira who rushed for 89 yards on 16 carries, while Sherrell added 66 yards and a touchdown.
Shield led the Lynx defense with 10 tackles, including eight solo, two tackles for a loss of six yards and one interception. A host of other Lynx recorded tackles, including seven from
Trey Hooper, six from
Joseph Raby, and five from
Raevon Felton.
