MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The hot shooting Rhodes women's basketball team used a strong offensive performance to blow by Sewanee, 81-49 on Friday night in Southern Athletic Association action.
The Lynx advance to a 14-3 overall record and a 6-1 record in conference play. The Tigers fall to 8-10 on the season and 5-6 in the SAA.
Rhodes opened the contest with an overwhelming offense and a tough defense that held the Tigers scoreless for the first seven minutes. The Lynx used a 17-0 start to establish a healthy lead behind three's from
Symone Daniels,
Lauren Avant, and
Catherine Eckert. The hot shooting Lynx didn't cool off, as they converted on their next five offensive trips, with a pair of buckets from
Bailey Kramer at the 9:35 mark made the score 29-6. Rhodes closed out the half outscoring the Tigers by a margin of 16-5 to post a halftime score of 50-18.
Avant led all scorers at the half with her 14 points. Daniels added nine and Dy'Nelle Todman chipped in seven towards the Lynx total. Sewanee was led by Savannah Rose, who posted six first half points, followed by Paige Lowe who netted four.
The Lynx defense held the Tigers to just 33.3 percent shooting in the first half and forced 18 turnovers. Rhodes capitalized on the high number of Sewanee mistakes, creating 24 points off turnovers. Coach Dean's squad posted a hot first half shooting total of 59.4 percent from the field and a scorching three point percentage of 66.7 percent, shooting eight of 12 from beyond the arc.
The hot shot Lynx continued their streak in the second half, as Eckert knocked down three straight three's by the 15:35 mark to give Rhodes the 60-21 lead. The Lynx continued to pour on the points with an old-fashioned three point play from
Taylor Money with 5:58 to play to give the Lynx a 76-35 advantage. Sewanee ended the game with a 12 point run, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Lynx as they posted a 81-49 win.
Eckert led all scorers in the contest with her 15 points after shooting five-for-seven from the field. Avant finished the night with 14 points and four rebounds, while Daniels and Kramer each added 10 apiece. Daniels also grabbed six rebounds.
Sarah Johnson posted an impressive eight assists in the outing to go with four steals.
The Tigers were led by Rose and Haley McDonough who each added nine points. Casey Hassett chipped in eight with seven rebounds.
The Lynx finished the contest with a 51.7 percent shooting percentage, and knocked down 12 three pointers. Sewanee posted 42.5 percent shooting from the field and an average of 31.3 percent from beyond the arc.
The Lynx will remain home for their next contest, as they host Centre College on Feb. 2 at 1 p.m.
