MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Rhodes women's basketball blew by Berry College in the first conference matchup of the year, 84-60 on Friday night in Southern Athletic Association action.
Rhodes advances their record to 10-2 and 2-0 in conference play while Berry falls to 5-6 and 0-2 in league action.
Rhodes had a sluggish start to the night and found themselves down by four early after a Chanlir Segarra three made the score 6-2 1:42 into the game. But the Lynx wouldn't stay down long as they surged back to grab the lead after a
Natalie Goodrum three at the 8:19 mark to make the count 18-17 in the Lynx' favor. Rhodes put together a 17-3 run to extend their lead to 32-20 with 3:07 left to play. The Lynx closed out the half with a
Symone Daniels bucket to make the count 41-27 at the half.
Rhodes' leaders at the break included Dy'Nelle Todman who had 13 first half points,
Lauren Avant who added 12 and Daniels who posted nine. Berry was led by Segarra who had nine points as well followed by Maggie Trimble who added six.
The Lynx held the Vikings to 31.6 percent shooting from the field, but Berry put up an impressive 4-8 from beyond the three point arc. In the half Rhodes shot 45.5 percent from the field, making three, three point attempts.
Rhodes continued to apply the pressure in the second half and build on its lead. The Lynx opened the half with a 15-0 run to give Rhodes an extra cushion of 56-29 with 15:22 to play. Coach Dean's squad kept the scoring coming and after a Daniels layup with 7:01 left to play, the Lynx led 74-45. Rhodes closed the contest out strong and earned its largest lead with 2:47 to play after a Blair Smith jumper made the count 82-50. The Lynx defense held on and finished the contest with a score of 84-60.
Rhodes shot 42.3 percent from the field, shooting 7-26 from beyond the arc. The Vikings put up a comparable 40.9 percent from the field, converting 6-14 attempts from three point range.
Berry was led in scoring by Segarra, who had a game-high 21 points. Mel McLean added 12 to the Vikings total, with 10 points from Emma Cook.
Rhodes scoring was led by Avant and Daniels who led the way with 19 apiece. Daniels earned her fourth double-double of the season pulling in 10 rebounds. The Memphis, Tenn. native also two steals. Avant grabbed eight rebounds in her comeback game, with three steals. Todman scored 18 points in the outing, with
Sarah Johnson getting into the double digits with 10 points. Johnson also posted five assists to two steals on the night.
Rhodes will continue its home stretch as they face off against Oglethorpe University on Sunday Jan. 12 at 1 p.m.
